Rise Up Cafe, formerly known as Rise & Nye’s, held a ribbon-cutting ceremony Tuesday morning to celebrate their grand re-opening. While the coffee shop (proudly located in the heart of downtown Sarasota) may have a new name and some exciting new offerings, it is still operating with the same important mission–inclusion, acceptance and opportunity for all.
Beaver Shriver, founder and owner of Rise Up, opened the ceremony with welcoming remarks. “We are so excited to be back for our grand re-opening. Thank you so much for the amazing ride over the last almost 3 years now,” he said. He then went on to thank his wife, Erin Shriver, who he says has reinvented the whole show. “We’ve stepped up everything here. Our products will contain no artificial colors and no artificial flavors, and we are now featuring our amazing Broken Bagels.” These special bagels, he explained, may be a little swirly, have a few wrinkles, dimples and dents on the outside, but like everyone at Rise Up, they just are perfect on the inside.
Erin Shriver is thrilled to be working alongside her husband and joining the Rise Up team. A hairstylist by trade, she was getting ready to open a local salon of her own with a similar mission: to hire and train special needs employees to work the front desk and handle other tasks necessary to keep the business running smoothly. Then, when the Rise & Nye’s partnership ended, she decided to join the Rise Up team. In addition to spearheading the development of new products, like overnight oats and bagels, Erin will be leading the creative culinary team and helping employees earn their baker’s caps from King Arthur Flour. She’ll be teaching them how to make ice cream, muffins, chia pudding, overnight oats and cinnamon buns so they can gain the measuring, preparation and baking skills needed to be successful at other jobs.
The Shriver family has been dedicated to serving and giving to others for many years, and Beaver Shriver has continued the tradition by giving his time and financial support to many organizations, particularly those that champion for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities including Inclusion Revolution, Shriver Education for the Arts, Special Olympics, Best Buddies, and others. “He’s been immersed in it from birth,” shares Erin.
In his closing remarks at the ceremony, Shriver encouraged community members to get involved in the inclusion mission. “We have over 25 people employed here with more than 300 people on our waiting list. In fact, I received another five applications yesterday,” he said. “Where do all of these people go? Publix may hire a few. Goodwill will hire a few. But we need to challenge every business in town to hire just one off the waitlist. We have thousands of people ready to work. Give it a go.”

Thursday, October 19th at 6PM the Suncoast Again Network will host the 2nd Annual Masquerade Ball at Gold Coast Eagle Distributing. Suncoast Aging Network, a 501c3, is a senior support and resource organization providing grants, education, and referrals for things important to Manatee and Sarasota County Seniors. Suncoast Aging network helps the senior community through several initiatives. The first of those initiatives is by being advocates for seniors, service providers, and our community to address our seniors’ unmet needs. We also provide networking opportunities for persons and organizations involved in senior services. And their goal to provide seniors, caregivers, and senior professionals a comprehensive source of services, senior housing options, resources, and information working in tandem with our community. Chazsady Davis, Suncoast Aging Network Board of Directors President explained, “The Masquerade Ball is one of the many fundraisers that we hold throughout the year. We thrive on our fundraising efforts in order to keep the organization functioning as we are a volunteer only organization.” Owner SailorGirl Companies and platinum sponsor of the ball, Jeanine Johnson, a board member of Suncoast Aging Network remarked, “By supporting the Masquerade Ball, this allows us to contribute small grants in support of other local non-profit organizations, that provide valuable services to Sarasota and Manatee County seniors.” Johnson continues, “This will be a fun and glamorous night out with a blend of elegance and fun. Senior Friendship Centers, through a generous grant from the National Council on Aging (NCOA), will be hosting a series of vaccine clinics for seniors now through the end of the year at their Sarasota and Venice campuses. These clinics are all open to the public. Recognizing the unique vulnerability of older adults to infections like the flu, pneumonia, and shingles, Senior Friendship Centers, in partnership with the Florida Department of Health (DOH) and Walgreens, is taking proactive steps to protect seniors in our communities. As the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services emphasizes, vaccines are of paramount importance for older adults. With aging, the immune system weakens, making it more challenging to combat infections. Older adults are not only more susceptible to diseases but also to complications that can result in long-term illness, hospitalization, and even death. For those with ongoing health conditions such as diabetes or heart disease, vaccination is especially critical as it can shield them from serious diseases and related complications. The 27th Annual Phil Galvano Golf Classic will be held this Friday, October 13, 2023, at the Longboat Key Club & Resort to benefit public schools in Manatee County through the Manatee Education Foundation. The always popular event was started in 1996 to honor Senator Bill Galvano’s father, the late Phil Galvano, Sr., “A Golf Professional to the Stars” who taught such well-known personalities as Bob Hope, Jackie Gleason, Tony Bennett, Carol Burnett, and Johnny Carson. Phil Galvano also dedicated much of his time to the youth of Manatee County. On Friday, October 13, 2023, the golf tournament at the Longboat Key Club and Resort will begin with lunch ‘Under the Big Top,’ sponsored by Pier 22, with dinner from Glory Days Grill. Excitement will surround the Noon shotgun start with a helicopter golf ball drop from the sky. Four new board members have recently joined JFCS of the Suncoast, bringing a wealth of experience and expertise to the organization. Joining the board is Adam Gersh, SPHR, GPHR, Talent Acquisition Leader with Arcadis North America. With an M.B.A. from the University of Michigan, Adam is passionate about improving the lives of the less fortunate in the Sarasota/Manatee area. He is also a member and volunteer with Temple Sinai. Ellen Goldner was Director of Admissions for Alexander Muss High School in Israel, and Director of Development for the Y Camps in New Jersey. She holds a Master’s Degree in Guidance and Counseling from Kean College, and a B.A. in Elementary Education from American University, Dan Dannheisser, P.A., founding partner at Dannheisser Injury Law and member of the Bar Associations for Florida, District of Columbia, Colorado, the American Bar and Florida Justice Academy has also served on the Sarasota Rotary, Sarasota African American Cultural Coalition, Safe Children Coalition and Temple Sinai. He holds a Doctorate of Law from the University of University of Florida College of Law, and graduated Cum Laude. Sasha Rosin, currently a realtor with Horizon Realty and a background in volunteer work, has also joined the board. She holds Master’s Degree in School Counseling from Georgia State University and has served on committees for the Jewish Federation and Community Day School.
Forty Carrots Family Center’s Generations of Change Expansion Campaign reaches another milestone as its new building for expanded Mental Health and Parenting Education services takes shape as the roof goes on. Architects the Schimberg Group and builder Tandem Construction are thrilled to be ahead of schedule with plumbing and electricity completed and windows installed. The campaign has reached another milestone as it reaches $8.75 million of the $10 million dollar goal for the building and program expansion. Since 2020, Forty Carrots has increased child and family mental health services by over 70%, and the expansion will allow for a 100% increase in Mental Health and 30% in Parenting Education services over the next several years.The Generations of Change expansion includes a new 6900 sq ft building on 1.72 acres at 1350 Cattlemen Rd. It offers a Child and Family Therapy Center with 6 therapy rooms, intake office, waiting area and Parenting Education Center equipped with flexible capacity with moveable wall and observation capabilities, virtual program rooms, administrative offices, and program staff workspaces. The addition of the Cattlemen property allows the existing buildings on S. Tuttle Avenue to expand early education and house administrative offices. The Hermitage Artist Retreat announces today that world-renowned and Grammy Award-winning string quartet ETHEL will headline the Hermitage’s signature fall fundraising event, “The Artful Lobster: An Outdoor Celebration!” on Saturday, November 11th from 11:30am to 2pm at the Hermitage campus on Manasota Key. This is the first time in many years that all four members of ETHEL – Ralph Farris, Kip Jones, Dorothy Lawson, and Corin Lee – will be reuniting at the Hermitage to celebrate this milestone anniversary of the event. This year’s Artful Lobster will also feature a performance by new Hermitage Fellow Emi Ferguson, a celebrated flutist and performer. Now in its 15th year and following the 20th anniversary season of the Hermitage, the Artful Lobster raises valuable funds for the Hermitage’s nationally renowned artist residency program, supporting the creative process of artists from around the world in the fields of music, theater, visual art, literature, dance, and more. This popular event, which takes place outdoors beneath a large tent on the Hermitage’s beachfront campus, features a lobster feast catered by Michael’s On East, in addition to live performances from renowned Hermitage Fellows. These grants will help underwrite the cost of providing programming for Pines of Sarasota Rehabilitation and Senior Care Community and The Rogers Garden-Bullock Elementary School. The World of Chucko Inc. team present multifaceted "Laughter Unlimited" programs filled with Humor, Music, Art, Entertainment, and Education! Laughter Unlimited uses "humor therapy" and “music therapy” to reduce stress, decrease pain and have a positive and lasting effect on the immune system, heart, and brain. “We are proud of our intergenerational programs at Pines of Sarasota,” states Mike Ward, its President and CEO. “Our on- campus child care center allows for invaluable interactions among the seniors and children in our care, and the activities provided by Chuck, Noriko and Laughter Unlimited enrich both groups. We are grateful for the generosity of the Sarasota Kiwanis Club for this grant.” The kind gift from Thomas and Linda McDonald of Longboat Key will provide interactive, educational, and entertaining programing to the 6 to11 year old special needs children at Rogers Garden-Bullock Elementary School. For over four decades, they have been dedicated to helping survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault find their voice and rebuild their lives. Their commitment knows no bounds. At SPARCC, survivors find a safe haven. They offer crisis intervention, counseling, legal advocacy, and even shelter for those in immediate danger. Their empowering approach and wrap-around services ensure that survivors receive the support they need to heal and rebuild their lives.

Florida Studio Theatre (FST) is proud to announce that The Exchange has awarded the regional theatre a grant for $30,000, underwriting FST’s current three-show Winter Cabaret Series as well as its 2024 Summer Cabaret Series. This grant award marks a 20% increase from what the theatre received last year, demonstrating The Exchange’s committed support of FST’s popular Cabaret program. Over the past 60+ years, The Exchange has awarded more than $9 million in grants and scholarships. FST kicked off its Winter Cabaret Series—which this grant from The Exchange helps underwrite—on September 27 with Up on the Roof, an all-new music revue celebrating the legendary songwriters who created what became known as the “Brill Sound” in the ‘50s and ‘60s. Funds from The Exchange will also support FST’s two other Winter Cabaret productions—Take It to the Limit and The Flip Side—as well as the theatre’s three-show Summer Cabaret Series, running June through October 2024.

The Ringling presents a solo exhibition of works by Lorna Bieber in May that includes two new pieces making their debut in the Keith D. and Linda L. Monda Gallery for Contemporary Art. Her artwork first and foremost encourages us to indulge in the pleasures of looking and discovering anew the details of the visual world. Her artistic practice is grounded in appropriating, recycling, and manipulating imagery. The work reminds us of the image world that inundates our daily existence. Our experience of reality is mediated through a barrage of photographic digital images that supplants our connection to the natural world. Yet, Bieber is less interested in a critique of this condition than she is in offering her work as an antidote, a way to inspire viewers and reconnect with our shared sense of wonder. Visit Fresh Harvest, the newly launched weekly farmers market in Downtown Wellen. Fresh Harvest offers a selection of local goods from nearly 40 local vendors. Explore labor through The Ringlings Working Conditions photography exhibit, running until March 3, 2024. The Industrial Revolution of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries radically changed the nature of human labor. That era is defined by a global shift from producing goods by hand to manufacturing by machines and technologies that emphasized efficiency. Working Conditions explores the myriad ways in which photographs have communicated ideas about labor since the nineteenth century through examples from The Ringlings photography permanent collection. The annual SPARCC black tie gala, SPARCCle in the Garden will take place on Friday, November 3 at the Marie Selby Botanical Gardens.
