[Baseball]  Bradenton Marauders Open Homestand with a Resurgent Win
Dylan Campbell, dylan@srqme.com

On Tuesday night, the Bradenton Marauders, Single-A affiliate of the Pittsburgh Pirates, opened their six-game homestand with a walk-off win in extra-innings against the Jupiter Hammerheads, the Single-A affiliate of the Miami Marlins. The Marauders, who at 22-18 are eight games back from the lead in the Florida State League West division, needed the win as they had dropped five of their last six games to the division leading Clearwater Threshers.

Tuesday night’s victory came in dramatic fashion for the Marauders. Owen Kellington, who was selected in the fourth round of the 2021 MLB Amatuer Draft by the Pirates, got the start for Bradenton, going four innings while allowing two earned runs off of three hits and two walks. Kellington, owner of a 4.39 ERA and 0-1 record on the year, received a no decision for his start.

After trailing for much of the game, the Marauders evened the score in the sixth inning at 2-2, courtesy of a Temarr Johnson RBI single. The game stayed knotted at two runs a piece until the bottom of the 10th inning, when with the winning run a third base, the Hammerheads bobbled a routine pop fly to shortstop from Pirates 26th ranked prospect Shalin Polanco, allowing the winning run to advance from third base.

The Marauders have three different promotional nights taking place over this homestand including Thirsty Thursday on May 25, Mental Health Awareness on May 26, and Military Appreciation Night on May 27.

[Hershorin Schiff Community Day School]  RocketKids: Guide to Private Schools - Hershorin Schiff Community Day School

COMMUNITY DAY SCHOOL (CDS) is a fully accredited early childhood and kindergarten - 8th grade inclusive and pluralistic Jewish day school that proudly celebrates students of all faiths, backgrounds and ethnicities. In less than eight years since incorporating as an independent entity, CDS has grown into a nationally recognized model of education, tripling in size to 325 students and welcoming families representing over 41 different nationalities. Built on the principles of inclusion, acceptance and tolerance, our goal is simple: to create a safe, small, nurturing learning community where students impact our world as compassionate scholars and global citizens. Community Day School is uniquely positioned to build bridges between different faiths, levels of observance and cultures — uniting cross-sections of our community that rarely have a space to come together. Our commitment to inclusion is reflected in our enrollment, variable tuition financial aid, and programming - we proudly welcome all. Our spacious new 8.8 acre campus offers tremendous opportunity for educational growth and meaningful student experiences. Its central Sarasota location, expands our accessibility to families throughout the community. It integrally supports our commitment to all students going outdoors for at least one hour per day in order to create an effective learning environment for the children. Our preschool embraces a Reggio Emilia-inspired, play-based educational approach while the Elementary and Middle schools employ a rigorous, student-centered, project-based curriculum. Community Day’s unique program features hands-on, experiential learning and deliberately small class sizes allowing students to pursue their natural interests by connecting learning to real life experiences. Once students graduate, they are well prepared for advanced placement curriculum and poised for future success. They know who they are and what they stand for; recognize their unique gifts and how to use them; dare to pose questions and seek solutions; live their beliefs and respect others; and think and reason for themselves.

School's Mission

The mission of the Hershorin Schiff Community Day School is to impact the world by creating a community where children of all faiths demonstrate integrity, academic excellence, and a desire to improve the world.

[Arts & Entertainment]  Hermitage Announces Second Year of the Cross Arts Collaborative in Support of Sarasota Artists and Performing Arts Institutions

The Hermitage Artist Retreat is pleased to announce the continuation of the Sarasota Cross Arts Collaborative, made possible once more with generous support from the Koski Family Foundation. This initiative is designed to give frequent performers and company members from leading Sarasota arts organizations a chance to expand their artistic practice from ‘performer’ to ‘creator.’ In the exciting second season of the Hermitage’s Cross Arts Collaborative, this distinguished honor has been awarded to Lizzie Hagstedt, a frequent musical collaborator with Asolo Repertory Theatre, and Jessica Obiedzinski, a long-standing company member at Sarasota Contemporary Dance. A free public program showcasing the work Hagstedt and Obiedzinski is planned for the fall of 2023; details will be announced at a later time.

“We know there are actors, dancers, musicians, and performing artists working amidst our circle of frequent collaborators who have passion projects waiting in the wings,” said Hermitage Artistic Director and CEO Andy Sandberg, "This could be an actor writing a play between production contracts, a violinist composing a symphony after rehearsals, a dancer yearning to expand into the choreographer's space – or someone looking to work across an entirely new genre."

The Ringling presents a solo exhibition of works by Lorna Bieber in May that includes two new pieces making their debut in the Keith D. and Linda L. Monda Gallery for Contemporary Art. Her artwork first and foremost encourages us to indulge in the pleasures of looking and discovering anew the details of the visual world. Her artistic practice is grounded in appropriating, recycling, and manipulating imagery. The work reminds us of the image world that inundates our daily existence. Our experience of reality is mediated through a barrage of photographic digital images that supplants our connection to the natural world. Yet, Bieber is less interested in a critique of this condition than she is in offering her work as an antidote, a way to inspire viewers and reconnect with our shared sense of wonder. Included with museum admission. The Ringling Museum, 5401 Bay Shore Rd., Sarasota, ringling.org.

The Ringling is honored to have had the opportunity to work closely with Sims, who was their artist in residence in 2020. The exhibition From the Chambers, Honoring John Sims brings those two works together, on view publicly for the first time, in conjunction with John Chamberlain’s sculpture Added Pleasure. The exhibition serves as just one part of the significant legacy the artist leaves behind, in Sarasota and beyond. On view May 6 through August 6, 2023 in the Searing East galleries.
