Friday Weekend Edition

"It gets the crowd riled up and they love singing along with it, so it brings me joy to bring them joy."

- Eddie Weaver, Cast Member, The 70s: More Than A Decade.

[Arts & Entertainment]  Florida Studio Theatre's The 70s: More Than A Decade
Dylan Campbell, dylan@srqme.com

“You have to take care of your voice and it's extremely important that you hydrate. I drink two ounces of green tea, they say to drink eight glasses of water a day, but I exceed that to keep my voice hydrated. Then you need to warm up all the different cavities in your voice – in this show I sing different styles, some in contralto which is my natural range and others with a mixed voice and others in what they call a head voice,” says Jannie Jones, one of the cast members of Florida Studio Theatre’s cabaret, The 70s: More Than A Decade. The hit show, which ran for 19 weeks in FST’s Court Cabaret, was brought back for another 4 weeks in the beginning of March and is now airing in the company’s Mainstage Theatre.

The musical revue show encompasses all things ‘70s music and features everything from “Let’s Get It On'' by Marvin Gaye to The Doobie Brothers’ “Listen to the Music.” “It’s amazing to watch our audiences who were alive and well in the ‘70s sing along to all of the songs,” says Jones. “One of my favorite songs to perform is “The Way We Were” by Barbara Streisand. It allows me to not just sing the song but to go back in time and remember somebody in particular and draw from that place of emotion – it's wonderful to look into the audience's eyes and see them go back in their minds to the way they were with somebody else.”

For cast member Eddie Weaver, who recently completed FST’s Professional Training Program as an Acting Apprentice, the production has been a chance to chart his own musical journey into unfamiliar territory. “I love performing “Bad Bad Leroy Brown'' by Jim Croce, it’s one of those songs that gets the audience clapping. I didn’t know it before I joined the show but it's a great song. It gets the crowd riled up and they love singing along with it, so it brings me joy to bring them joy.”

[SRQ Book Club]  New Non-Fiction Review of The Good Life: Lessons From the World’s Longest Scientific Study of Happiness by Robert Waldinger, MD and Marc Schulz, MD
Bookseller Roxanne Baker, BookStoreOne Sarasota

While the fact that The Good Life is based on the longest study on happiness ever is a big deal, what’s most important to me, an average human being, is the payoff of the ‘sub’ subtitle, highlighted in orange on the cover: Create a More Meaningful and Satisfying Life.

The Good Life offers my favorite mechanism, charts for the reader to complete which glean insights that hours and many dollars of therapy would take to accomplish. Being energetic and optimistic, I jumped to action after looking at both charts of Sources of Support in My Life and People I Support, realizing that while I bemoan my lack of a consistent romance, I was also negligent in more demonstrative help for my Dad, a heroic main caregiver for my Grandma.

I’m sharing the result, not in a blow my own horn way, but as proof that this book really works! Thinking back on rewards I received in high school for getting good grades, I made High Honor Certificates for my family with specifics on what made me proud. I then chose treats, as I once received ‘back in the day’, that I knew each of them would enjoy. This not only thrilled my family, but gave me an altruism boost.

The book tackles almost every type of relationship in expressing data from their longitudinal study as well as linking it to today’s challenges of social media overdose and disconnectedness.
If you think your life could use some spring cleaning, The Good Life is just the book for you.

Publication Date: January 10, 2023, ISBN: 9781982166694.

The Good Life is available now at Bookstore1 Sarasota located at 117 S. Pineapple Avenue or at the online store available on their website: www.sarasotabooks.com.
