The Arts Advocates’ scholarship program, which has awarded over $1,000,000 to students since 1969 is now acceptiong applications through March 15, 2023 for the 2023-2024 academic year. The tuition awards are given to talented students in Florida who are pursuing undergraduate studies in the arts, including visual and related arts, dance, writing, music, theater, and architecture. High school seniors and college students who will major in these fields in the 2023-2024 school year are eligible to apply. The award also includes a one year membership in Arts Advocates.

The scholarships are awarded to students planning to have careers in the arts, and are based on artistic talent, family need, character, academic achievement, and appropriate college choice. U.S. citizenship with a one-year residency in Sarasota County or Manatee County is required.

In May of 2022, ten lucky Sarasota and Manatee county students were awarded scholarships totaling $20,000 for the 2022-2023 school year. The recipients, Sophia Coscia, Thaleia Dasberg, Lillian Fox, Pablo Gonzalez, Azure Heck, Colin Leonard, Emma Pritchett, John Quigley, Luca Stine and Katherina Zdravkov, were celebrated during the Arts Advocates general meeting luncheon in May where several gave presentations or performed.

"It wasn't until I moved away from Sarasota that I realized how fortunate I was to grow up in a community that focused on the arts and gave opportunities for children to learn and participate," shares Adelaide Boedecker, an opera singer and scholarship recipient from previous years. "Those programs are the foundation that my career is built upon and to be able to complete my education without the tremendous debt of student loans is a wonderful gift that you have given me."

Arts Advocates is a nonprofit, philanthropic membership organization dedicated to inspiring creativity, advancing education, and connecting the community to the arts. They do this through sponsoring creative educational and cultural programs, and awarding scholarships to students pursuing careers in the arts. All scholarship monies are generated through Arts Advocates activities and donations.

[Grants]  Virginia B. Toulmin Foundation Bolsters Mental Health Support for Children and Families in Need

With 90% of a child’s brain development occurring in the first five years of life, the early experiences and environments in which they have them cause a direct effect on their overall growth and success. As a leader of the Children First Changemaker Collective, the Virginia B. Toulmin Foundation has made two gifts totaling $100,000. Their generosity will support the agency’s $600,000 challenge match to expand its comprehensive services as well as bolster and enrich mental health services, including the addition of a third Early Childhood Mental Health Specialist. Ranked in the top 1% of more than 1,800 Head Start programs nationwide, Children First serves hundreds of children, ages birth to five, and their families living at or below the Federal Poverty Level ($23,030 for a family of 3) each year. The agency offers services at multiple locations across North Port, Sarasota, and Venice. “After the devastating experiences of the pandemic and more recently, Hurricane Ian, the need for mental health services has been on the rise. As a foundation dedicated to improving the conditions and quality of life for children and their families, we saw an opportunity to provide critical support to those in need through the enhancement of Children First’s mental health services,” says William Villafranco, co-trustee.

Share a recent achievement for which you are the most proud.

A personal recent achievement is coming up on my 20 year anniversary from beating a rare bone cancer called osteosarcoma as a teenager. I found out I had cancer while playing football my freshman year of high school back in Cincinnati, Ohio. I moved to Houston, Texas, where I went through almost 2 years of chemotherapy and many surgeries. The experience has taught me countless life lessons ranging from never taking a day for granted, seeing how family and friends step up through the toughest times, and to never ever give up. A professional achievement that I am really proud of was being selected to the Sarasota Chamber of Commerce Leadership Class of 2023.

[SOON]  : The Ringling - A Decade of Collecting , October 22 – January 22, Varied

A Decade of Collecting brings together a survey of artworks acquired for the permanent collection over the past eleven years. As the State Art Museum of Florida and a division of Florida State University, The Ringling’s collections are constantly expanding to provide our state and local community with access to current contemporary works in all media and thoughtful additions to our historic collections. Though the core of the collection has always been the works acquired by John and Mable Ringling, the museum’s holdings have been expanding ever since the State of Florida took full possession of the bequest in 1946. In the early years, these additions were mainly in pre-1800 European art and circus-related material, but over the second half of the 20th century, directors and curators also began acquiring works by modern and contemporary artists. A Decade of Collecting presents a unique snapshot of how The Ringling’s collection continues to evolve, allowing us to tell new stories of the past, present, and future.
