The North Port Police Officers Association and city police department put its giving power to use helping a single family in need. Officers last week showed up at the home of Michelle Jordal, a resident fighting lung cancer. They provided the family more than $7,000 worth of gifts and resources raised with the help of area businesses.

Cameras captured the moment as Jordal learned of the community support for her family.

“This is such a morale boost to me so thank you, honestly,” she said, “because I feel isolated sometimes, so it’s nice to feel this way.”

It’s part of an annual program conducted by the police union and city to direct charity efforts to greatly lift individuals going through a difficult period during the holiday season.

“This year we decided to kind of adopt a family who unfortunately have certain medical conditions that every day is a gift for them,” said Officer Chris Clark, who led the presentation ceremony. “So we wanted to make sure that this one right here is one that they’re going to remember, and they’re going to remember for the rest of their lives.”

Josh Taylor, public information officer for the North Port Police, said the effort takes place every year. “We all wanted to make sure that her family has a wonderful holiday. Thank you to all the local businesses who made this effort possible. North Port is a true #CommunityofUnity,” he said in an email to media.

In a giving season, Clark said the opportunity to give helps lift the spirits of everyone involved.

“I feel that my heart grew two sizes bigger today after doing this,” he said.
