Friday Weekend Edition

"These artifacts can mean something different to everyone. I think that it's important that the artifacts are here, telling their story right next to the artists telling their stories thousands of years later."

- Jackie Cutrone, President and CEO of the Halo Arts Project.

[Arts & Entertainment]  Justified + Ancient at Mara Art Gallery
Dylan Campbell, dylan@srqme.com

On Thursday, October 27th, the Mara Art Studio and Gallery held the premiere preview event for their latest exhibit, Justified + Ancient, a decidedly modern take on ancient artifacts. The exhibit, which has its grand opening on Friday night and will be fully open to the public from November 1st-17th, features the pairings of 16 ancient artifacts with visual representations of them from 16 different modern artists, all based in Sarasota and Manatee counties. “We have selected 16 pieces from the collection, courtesy of an anonymous artifact collector in Siesta Key. We’re pairing them with contemporary artists to reimagine and redesign that artifact with their own representation,” says Jackie Cutrone, President and CEO of the Halo Arts Project, the public, charitable arts organization that seeks to provide financial resources and programming resources to visual artists in the region – and is presenting the exhibit in conjunction with the Mara Art Studio and Gallery.

“The artifacts range in age from 3000 BC to the 19th century. Painters will paint, sculptors will sculpt, a poet will write a poem about the oldest writing tool, a cuneiform, which we have in the exhibit,” says Cutrone. “It’s one on one – each artist has their artifact next to their work. They’ll all be present for the grand opening.” Additionally, the exhibit is more akin to a performing art exhibit than a traditional static art show. “Not only is the artwork working the crowd, the artifact is working the crowd. These artifacts can mean something different to everyone. I think that it's important that the artifacts are here, telling their story right next to the artists telling their stories thousands of years later.”

For Mara Torres Gonzalez, modern contemporary artist and owner of Mara Art Studio and Gallery, the exhibit gave her the opportunity to explore modern femininity in relation to her artifact, an ancient Egyptian sarcophagus. “It was beyond interesting working with a BC era artifact made by an artisan to come up with this contemporary interpretation of an old piece of art. I was struck by the different sides of the sarcophagus – the male side was three dimensional and well detailed and the female side was two dimensional and much less detailed,” says Gonzalez. “I explored what I thought the female side should look like – I came up with a 74 inch tall painting of a female, with hips and curves, not drawn to some “perfect” standard. It’s one in a series of 16 pieces I made.”

[Tournaments]  Leveling the Playing Field
Dylan Campbell, dylan@srqme.com

“If I’m being honest, putting kind of levels the playing field. I’m never gonna be able to add 75 yards to my drive. But if I practice, do my homework, and am consistent, I have a chance to compete in putt putt with any golfer,” says Guillaume Beland, tournament director at Popstroke Entertainment Group, the technology infused golf entertainment venue which officially opened the doors to its Sarasota location this past past April. The golf-entertainment venture – co-owned by Tiger Woods’ TGR Ventures – has four locations in Florida, including Sarasota’s venue, which features two 18-hole putting courses designed by Wood’s TGR Design team in addition to an outdoor dining area and rooftop bar.

This week, Popstroke’s Sarasota location is home to three putting tournaments, both with much higher stakes than your typical mini-golf outing. First is the Team Championship, which took place over four rounds on Wednesday and Thursday. “We have 200 teams of two, so 400 hundred total golfers, all coming from 18 different countries and 49 different states. There’s a mix of professional putt putt players, mini tour golf players, one tour professional, people that like to golf, and PGA of America professionals. There’s a $100,000 purse, with $20,000 awarded to the winner,” says Beland.

Next, the Stroke Play Championship on Thursday and Friday, an individual contest also lasting four rounds, with a field of 100 players and a purse of $25,000 with $5,000 allotted to the winner. And finally, the biggest of all, the Taylormade $25k showdown at the conclusion of the team and stroke play tournaments this Friday. “The winning team of the Team Championship will not only win $20,000, but will also win a chance to compete for an additional $25,000 across 18 holes of putting against PGA and LPGA tour golfers RIckie Fowler and Paula Creamer,” says Beland.

[Survey]  Sarasota Orchestra Seeks Community-Wide Input on New Music Center Vision

Sarasota Orchestra released a public survey Wednesday afternoon to collect feedback about the organization, its planned music center and how the Orchestra might use this new project to better serve the community. In March, Sarasota Orchestra announced plans to build a music center on 32 acres at 5701 Fruitville Road between Honore Avenue and Cattlemen Road. The Orchestra will use survey results to inform a masterplan that reflects the community’s input. Aspirations for the music center currently include the region’s first acoustic concert hall, a recital hall, rehearsal spaces, practice rooms and administrative offices. The site will also include about 12 acres of publicly accessible green spaces, such as parks, walking trails and water features. Sarasota Orchestra is facing an urgent need for increased performance, education, rehearsal, storage, and administrative space to accommodate more concert dates and greater participation in Sarasota Orchestra’s youth programs. Find the survey at: www.SarasotaOrchestra.org/MusicCenterSurvey. Sarasota Orchestra’s online survey is open now until Friday, Nov. 18.

[Recycling ]  Friends of Osprey Junction Trailhead Announces eBike Battery Recycling Program

Research shows that more than 12 million electric bicycles (e-bikes) are estimated to be sold in the United States between 2020 and 2030. That’s 12 million batteries used to power those e-bikes that will need to be safely and responsibly collected and recycled at their end-of-life. With this in mind, Friends of Osprey Junction Trailhead has announced an eBike Battery Recycling Program. Partnering with Call2Recycle, the country’s leading consumer battery recycling and stewardship program (www.call2recycle.org) and local bike shops participating in the program, Friends of Osprey Junction Trailhead is excited to add this ebike battery recycling program to its existing community services and programs. If you have an ebike battery you wish to recycle, you can find the drop-off location nearest to you by visiting https://www.call2recycle.org/e-bikes/ and do a zip code search. For more information, contact Ralph Monti, Director of Bicycle Programs for Friends of Osprey Junction Trailhead by email at ralphmonti@gmail.com.

[JFCS]  JFCS - Adopt-a-Family

Since 2004, JFCS has organized its annual Adopt-a-Family campaign to help ease the burden on parents struggling to provide holiday meals and gifts to their families. Donors can also brighten the day of seniors in isolation through the Adopt-a-Senior program.

JFCS has 150 seniors and more than 300 children to be adopted this holiday season. Those wishing to adopt a family should be willing to purchase a gift card from a major retailer to help the parent shop for a holiday meal. Donors will be provided with details about the families they have been paired up with so they can purchase one or more of the items on the children’s holiday wish lists, as well as clothing and shoes in their sizes.

People who prefer to not be matched with a specific family with unique wishes can also choose to donate money toward the purchase of gifts, or they can donate general children’s toys and items. We have toy suggestions below. JFCS will match the items with families who would enjoy them.

Those adopting a senior should donate gift bags filled with hard candy, stamps, notepads, pens, hand lotion/sanitizer, lip balm, tissues, socks, magnets, and store gift cards. People can also donate funds toward senior gift bags.

Please email kpharo@jfcs-cares.org to adopt a family or senior. To donate money towards the Adopt-a-Family/Senior campaign, and for a full list of items to donate, please visit our website, https://jfcs-cares.org/holiday-giving/
