[Grand Opening]  Hot Chikn Kitchn Brings the Heat in Opening Weekend
Kevin Allen, kevin.allen@srqme.com

The budding, Virginia-based chain opened its third location in Sarasota this past weekend, welcoming lines out the door on Saturday. Avoiding Saturday's long lines, we opted to enjoy our Nashville hot chicken on Sunday when crowds had died down to a stead stream of curious lunchtime patrons. It did not disappoint.

I ordered the No. 1 combo, which is a Nashville style chicken sandwich on a tasty, toasted potato bun, with a handful of crunchy pickle slices, and a pile of coleslaw. There are two sauces on the sandwich, starting with the HCK “GOOD” sauce, which is a delightfully dippable remoulade that works as well with the spice-dusted, crispy crinkle-cut French fries as it does with the sandwich. Diners have a choice of four hot sauces that range from vaguely spicy (Base) to mildly spicy (After Burner; my choice), to the Scoville scale-topping (Angry Hot; Medic).

These sauces are the real deal, and not for the faint of tongue. Unless you’re a fan of ghost peppers and Carolina reapers, my advice is to stick with the Base or After Burner, which bursts with habañero flavor and complements rather than overpowering the sandwich.

But this is a chicken joint, so let’s talk about the main event. It’s tender, flavorful, and juicy where you want it to be, and just the right amount of crunch on the breading. The chicken soaks up the sauce perfectly, creating a goopy melange of peppery, remouladey goodness.

Hot Chikn Kitchn opened in the former TrapHouse Seafood and BBQ location near the corner of 41 and Bahia Vista. It’s no secret the plaza has had its share of turnover, but it’s clear the HCK invested heavily in revamping the interior.

Meanwhile, if you’re looking for a tasty, quick-service lunch close to downtown, you won’t be disappointed.

[Recognition]  Bradenton-Based First Watch Named Top 100 Most Loved Workplace By Newsweek

First Watch, the leading Daytime Dining concept with more than 445 restaurants nationwide, has been named a top 100 Most Loved Workplace® by Newsweek and the Best Practice Institute (BPI). Ranked as one of four restaurant companies on Newsweek’s second annual list, First Watch was recognized by its more than 10,000 team members for exceptional employee satisfaction and happiness at work. This news follows First Watch’s previously announced recognition by ADP for its Culture at Work Award earlier this year, reflecting the concept’s compounding efforts to create a quality of life and thriving culture for its teams that is unparalleled in the restaurant industry. “I am continuously in awe of our team members, who have put their full hearts into building our ‘You First’ culture over the past four decades, a culture all about putting people at the forefront of everything we do and celebrating one of our core beliefs, to Just Be Kind,” said Laura Sorensen, Chief People Officer at First Watch Restaurants. The results were determined after surveying more than 1.4 million employees from businesses with workforces varying in size from 50 to more than 10,000. Newsweek’s Top 100 list recognizes companies that put respect, caring and appreciation for their employees at the center of their business model and, in doing so, have earned the loyalty and respect of the people who work for them. Most Loved Workplaces® certify companies where employees are the happiest and most satisfied at work. First Watch became certified as a Most Loved Workplace based on its scores on the Love of Workplace Index™, which surveyed employees on various elements around employee satisfaction and sentiment, including the level of respect, support and sense of belonging they feel inside the company. More than 540 team members from the concept’s in-restaurant leadership and its Bradenton-based Home Office took part in providing feedback on culture, career-building and collaboration. This month, under the leadership of CEO Sherod Haliburton, the Credit Union has been awarded a $50,000 grant from The National Credit Union Administration. This grant was awarded to Financial Access to support the development of an Employee Financial Empowerment platform designed to provide local businesses a no-cost benefit that can be used as a recruitment and retention tool, providing the workers of the Credit Unions employer partners an opportunity to improve their financial health. This includes: helping employees grow credit scores; offering emergency loans to credit challenged employees; and providing access to below market auto and other loan products for employees. This offering will target employees that may have not otherwise qualified for a loan along with providing below market rates for financially stable employees. Financial Access will be providing resources to help employees with their understanding of personal finance and credit, helping employees grow their credit score and helping them gain access to low-cost loans.

“Providing resources that strengthen our workforce while building the financial capacity in workers is a long-time passion of mine and this grant allows us to help to improve the financial health of workers while supporting employee retention efforts for our local business partners”, Haliburton stated. Mireya Eavey, founding Executive Director of CareerEdge, will spearhead the new program as part of her role as the Credit Union’s newly appointed “Business Development Officer”. “Financial and housing instability are top issues faced by individuals coming from underserved communities--these issues often lead to workers having to quit and relocate and companies lose out on top talent. This grant allows the Credit Union to offer a solution that gives companies a no cost, value add incentive that will assist them in retaining and attracting skilled workers” Eavey said. CareerSource Suncoast will partner in these efforts, marketing the program and its benefits to their employer partners. “CareerSource Suncoast is proud to partner with Financial Access Credit Union in bringing this opportunity to local businesses,” said CEO Josh Matlock. “By providing local employers and their employees financial access, we will help them recruit, train, and retain local workers.” If you’re a business looking to take advantage of this program, please contact Mireya Eavey for more information at: meavey@financialaccessfcu.org

The annual Stuff The Bus event, which was started in 2009, was created through the kind hearts of the School District of Manatee County Transportation Staff. They wanted to give back to the community and knew of “Stuff the Bus” events in other cities and suggested placing one school bus in front of one Publix store in Manatee County. The leadership of Publix thought it was a great idea and requested a bus at every Publix store in Manatee County. Since 2009, nearly 1.1 million pounds of food has been donated through the Stuff The Bus food drive. Since the first Stuff the Bus event thirteen years ago, this event has evolved to include many Community Partners, including: United Way Suncoast, Publix, Herald-Tribune, the School District of Manatee County, and of course, the Transportation Staff of the School District. We are thrilled to have Mosaic as our presenting sponsor this year. All proceeds and donated food will benefit The Food Bank of Manatee, a PLUS program of Meals on Wheels PLUS. Please stop by your local Publix in Manatee County to support this event. Goal: Raise 150,000 pounds of food to feed Manatee County residents! All Manatee County Publix Locations.
