"We want to get these people out of harm's way and restore their lives to normalcy as soon as possible."

- Jon Thaxton, Senior Vice President for Community Leadership, Gulf Coast Community Foundation.

[Hurricane Relief]  Gulf Coast Community Foundation's Hurricane Ian Disaster Relief Fund
Barbie Heit, barbie.heit@srqme.com

In response to the devastating impact of Hurricane Ian, Gulf Coast Community Foundation has activated the Hurricane Ian Disaster Relief Fund.

According to Jon Thaxton, Senior Vice President for Community Leadership at Gulf Coast Community Foundation, the immediate focus of the funding will be on triage for families in crisis in those areas most affected by Ian: South Venice, Northport, Englewood, Port Charlotte, Punta Gorda and possibly DeSoto County.

Saxton, a fifth generation Sarasotan has had a great deal of experience with tropical storms and flooding and as soon as he saw the path that Ian was going to take, he told his staff, “This is one we need to worry about.” Sure enough, he was right. “Gulf Coast Community Foundation, as the name implies, has a laser focus on our immediate area and that does not change when a disaster occurs,” says Thaxton. “Our gig is raising money and applying it in the most strategic way to provide relief. We have our partnerships and relationships established and everything we needed to make this happen, was set up over the weekend.”

Thaxton and his team have been working with nonprofit and for profit partners on assessing the immediate needs and then providing funding quickly. However, because of the hazards created by Ian, they are just now able to get into the hardest hit areas. For food needs, the Foundation is teaming up with All Faiths Food Bank. For mental health, they are working with partners like Centerstone and First Step. With these and other agency partners, the Foundation is able to get relief money to those in need within a very short time. As soon as the Gulf Coast Hurricane Ian relief initiative was activated, the Foundation added $800,000 into it as an initial investment. As of Tuesday, they’ve received numerous donations, including one for $100,000.

“Like the real estate market and the pandemic, this storm is going to disproportionately impact our working core,” says Thaxton. “Covid was first to hit and then on top of that, there was a second hit that drove housing costs into the stratosphere beyond their ability to reach. Ian is the final blow. These families are going to need a lot of help for a long time to survive. We can convert generous philanthropy into actionable relief efficiently and immediately,” he adds.

The website for Gulf Coast Community Foundation is now dedicated to hurricane relief. You can make a tax deductible donation there and know that your money will go immediately to emergency triage. The Foundation will be covering all credit card fees.

“There has been a lot of emotion inside our organization,” says Thaxton. ”That’s why we are in this business. It's our passion and we want to take our personal feelings and convert them into assistance to our brothers and sisters to the south of us. We want to get these people out of harm's way and restore their lives to normalcy as soon as possible.”

[Hurricane Relief]  Education Foundation of Sarasota County Establishes Hurricane Ian Disaster Relief Fund for Schools

The Education Foundation of Sarasota County has established a Hurricane Ian Disaster Relief & Recovery Fund to accept monetary donations to support Sarasota County Schools and its 5,000-plus employees. The ferocious hurricane caused widespread damage with areas in South Sarasota County receiving the district’s worst impact. Full assessments of damages to schools are underway and will be ongoing as district officials are able to access campuses and receive updates from teachers and school support staff. Concurrent with initial assessments to determine if properties are safe for students and personnel to return, the district’s priority will be cleaning up and restoring school campuses so teachers and students can return to classrooms at a date to be determined. Several schools operated as emergency shelters before and during the onslaught of Hurricane Ian, and two schools continue to serve as shelters for displaced residents. In addition to debris removal on each campus and comprehensive cleaning and disinfecting required for each building, individual classrooms will need to be restored and basic supplies replenished.

“We are working in partnership with Superintendent Asplen, the Sarasota County School Board, and the Education Foundation Board of Directors to align our collective efforts to help ensure our students can continue to learn, teachers can continue to teach, and schools can become operational as quickly as possible,” said Jennifer Vigne, president and CEO of the Education Foundation. Donors who wish to mail contributions are asked to make checks payable to the Education Foundation of Sarasota County and include Hurricane Relief Fund in the memo field. Checks can be mailed or dropped off at the Education Foundation’s LaunchPad4U location in the Rosemary District, north of downtown Sarasota, at 1413 Boulevard of the Arts, Sarasota, Fla., 34236, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday, and 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday.

[SOON]  GRAB BAG: Stuff The Bus Food Drive , October 23, 9:00 am - 3:00 pm

The annual Stuff The Bus event, which was started in 2009, was created through the kind hearts of the School District of Manatee County Transportation Staff. They wanted to give back to the community and knew of “Stuff the Bus” events in other cities and suggested placing one school bus in front of one Publix store in Manatee County. The leadership of Publix thought it was a great idea and requested a bus at every Publix store in Manatee County. Since 2009, nearly 1.1 million pounds of food has been donated through the Stuff The Bus food drive. Since the first Stuff the Bus event thirteen years ago, this event has evolved to include many Community Partners, including: United Way Suncoast, Publix, Herald-Tribune, the School District of Manatee County, and of course, the Transportation Staff of the School District. We are thrilled to have Mosaic as our presenting sponsor this year. All proceeds and donated food will benefit The Food Bank of Manatee, a PLUS program of Meals on Wheels PLUS. Please stop by your local Publix in Manatee County to support this event. Goal: Raise 150,000 pounds of food to feed Manatee County residents! All Manatee County Publix Locations.
