"As any captain will tell you, the tripletail may not win any beauty contests, but it is some of the finest-tasting fish that swims."

[The Dish]  Three Cheers for the Tripletail Dinner
Abby Weingarten. Abby@srqme.com

Like grouper or snapper but with a slightly sweet flavor and firmness, the tripletail used to be somewhat of an unsung fish. Now it’s taking center stage as the menu headliner—as well as the namesake—of Tripletail Seafood & Spirits in The Landings. So, what makes this eponymous dish, known simply as the Tripletail Dinner, such a guest favorite?

“As any captain will tell you, the tripletail may not win any beauty contests, but it is some of the finest-tasting fish that swims,” the Tripletail owners say.

In the Tripletail Dinner, a filet of the mild, white, warmwater fish is pan-seared, sautéed and served over yellow rice with seasonal vegetables. Topping off the filet is a light citrus cream sauce, which is Tripletail Executive Chef Trae Peavey’s spin on a traditional beurre blanc. Peavey incorporates fresh lemon, orange and pineapple in a reduction with white wine, cream and butter.

The entrée pairs beautifully with a glass of Imagery Chardonnay from Sonoma, California. However, “spirits” isn’t in the locale’s title for no reason; there are plenty of other luscious libations at the bar. Consider a Key Lime Pie Martini—with Absolut Vanilia Vodka and a graham cracker rim—as a dessert finisher.

[Upcoming Event]  Impact Theatre's Inaugural Town Hall Gathering

On Sunday, May 22nd, the Impact Theatre will be hosting their inaugural Town Hall Gathering, where “Agents of Impact” will showcase their interpretations of local African American elders and Holocaust survivor’s stories through a medley of art, music, poetry, dance and theater. The event comes following a series of interviews that were conducted between 13 Jewish and Black high school students last month, where Holocaust survivors and Black elders who lived in the segregated South share their personal experiences of suffering from oppression, segregation, and persecution. The students (best known as “Agents of Impact”) will recap their elder’s stories at the event, and express what they’ve learned from those stories, including what course of action they plan to take as a result. Inspired by the relationship between Martin Luther King Jr. and Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel, Impact Theatre seeks to create “Agents of Impact” by connecting survivors of the Holocaust and segregated South with tomorrow’s champions for peace and social justice. Community partners leading the Impact Theatre’s initiative are The Jewish Federation of Sarasota-Manatee, Temple Sinai, and Newtown Alive! This event is free and open to the public, but registration is required. The Impact Theatre Inaugural Town Hall Gathering will be held at Riverview High School Performing Arts Center; 1 Ram Way, Sarasota on Sunday, May 22nd - 2:30 pm– 4:30 pm.

[Retirement News]  Sarasota Memorial Healthcare Foundation President to Retire This Fall

Sarasota Memorial Healthcare Foundation announced today that the organization’s president, Mason Ayres, has decided to retire effective September 30. Ayres has served in this role since 2016. Under his leadership, the Healthcare Foundation was transformed into one of Sarasota’s most successful non-profits, raising over $100 million, including two of the largest gifts in the Healthcare Foundation’s 47-year history. Ayres was instrumental in leading the Healthcare Foundation’s largest fundraising campaign in its history to support the creation of Sarasota Memorial’s new Cancer Institute. The Leading with Care cancer campaign launched in 2018 with a fundraising goal of $50 million. With a transformational gift of $25 million from the Brian and Sheila Jellison Family Foundation the original goal was exceeded and raised to $75 million. Most recently, Ayres spearheaded the team that acquired a $10 million gift to support the creation of the Cornell Family Behavioral Health Pavilion on the SMH-Sarasota Campus. Ayres’ other accomplishments include rebranding the organization to better align with the health system’s goals and vision, and creating the annual Hospital Gala, which has raised over $5.4 million in support of the hospital’s greatest needs. Ayres says his greatest accomplishment was the incredible team he built at the Healthcare Foundation.

[Recent Sale]  Huge Motorcoach Storage Facility Sells for $12.1 Million in Sarasota

Gail Bowden, Senior Investment Advisor for SVN Commercial Advisory Group, has managed the $12.1 million sale of a massive motorcoach storage facility at 5921 McIntosh Road in Sarasota. Las Vegas-based Crystal View Capital bought the property that spans 5.56 acres and contains nearly 14,000 square feet of storage area. Bowden represented both Crystal View Capital and seller Becca Properties, LLC, a Sarasota-based company. The hurricane-proof building contains air conditioned units with 24-hour security, onsite-management, water disposal, wifi hotspots and bathrooms for many of the units. There’s also a washing area onsite with a vacuum station. In addition to all the indoor units, some outdoor storage is available on the property. The new owner will continue operating this facility as a deluxe RV storage site. Crystal View Capital is a private equity firm that acquires and manages self-storage facilities and manufactured housing communities. Bowden managed the transaction without ever putting the property on the market or doing any advertising. Her many connections in the community helped her bring together the buyer and seller early on.

[New Partnership]  Goodwill Manasota Partnership with Gulfcoast Legal Services Expands to North Port

In 2018, Goodwill Manasota and Gulfcoast Legal Services launched a partnership in order to provide monthly legal clinics to Goodwill employees and the public at Goodwill's Corporate Campus in Bradenton. Through these monthly offerings, participants with legal questions have been able to take advantage of free consultations – up to half an hour each – with attorneys from Gulfcoast Legal Services. These consultations determine if participants are eligible for free representation in the following legal areas: family, housing, immigration, elder, consumer and/or victims of crime. Now, with the opening of a new Gulfcoast Legal Services office in Venice, the organization has agreed to present similar offerings at Goodwill's North Port location. The first session will take place on Thursday, May 26, 11 a.m.-3 p.m.; future sessions will take place on the third Thursday of every month. These monthly clinics are geared toward residents of Sarasota and Manatee counties who have limited income and assets and who are not able to afford a private attorney. Gulfcoast attorneys will meet with every person and determine what legal services may be available. Clinics take place in the Community Resource Center on the Goodwill Manasota Corporate Campus (2705 51st Ave. E., Bradenton) the second Wednesday every month, 9 a.m.-3 p.m., and Goodwill's North Port location (14879 Tamiami Tr.) on May 26 and then the third Thursday of each month, 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Participants are required to bring a photo ID and proof of income (paystub, SSI/SSDI statements, W-2 or bank statements showing deposits). While walk-ins are welcome, appointments are strongly recommended. To schedule in Bradenton, call Margo at 941-355-2721, ext. 190. To schedule for North Port, call Deshane at 941-355-2721, ext. 515.

[Job Training]  First Class Graduates from Tuition-Free Construction Training Program Offered by CareerEdge and Funded Through Selby Gardens Master Plan

The inaugural class of eight local residents graduated on May 5 from a first-of-its-kind training program in the construction field offered by CareerEdge Funders Collaborative and funded through Marie Selby Botanical Gardens’ Master Plan. Within a week of completing the training, at least two of the graduates had started new jobs with one of the subcontractors working on the Master Plan project at Selby Gardens’ Downtown Sarasota campus. CareerEdge’s new core construction skills training initiative is designed to provide participants with industry-recognized credentials in the construction field, as well as life and career-skills training and financial education through CareerEdge’s “Bridges to Careers” program. Participants receive 80 hours of training at no cost to them. Those who successfully complete the tuition-free training then have an opportunity to be considered for employment with one of the subcontractors working for Willis Smith Construction, the construction management firm for Selby Gardens’ Master Plan. The program is made possible through $100,000 in funding assistance from the Campaign for Selby Gardens’ Master Plan, with additional support from Bank of America. The Master Plan is estimated to have an economic impact of more than $78 million on the region, according to Selby Gardens President & CEO Jennifer Rominiecki. She said the training and job-placement initiative will help keep more of that impact and its future benefits in the local community. Within a week of the May 5 graduation, participant Dominique Campbell had started his first day on the job with Bright Future Electric, a subcontractor on the Selby Gardens project. A second graduate started working with the same company the following day.

Ah Who Run Dis, A Solo Exhibit by Krystle Lemonias. This work explores personal and political intersections of power that govern how people interact daily through an immigrant lens. It creates an entry point to consider the impact larger systems have on people from colonized nations. A subject is used to examine access, privilege, misuse, and obstruction to the status quo when one wields power. Each piece reflects the complexity of being resilient through society’s exploitive structure then, using this understanding to get over and ahead for one’s self. What is the cost of resilience? Who really has the power? This body of work shows intimate views of video, installation, prints, and performance. Opening Night Reception is Friday, May 20th, 2022 from 6pm to 8pm.
