"I was really excited about what I proposed, but I did not know how I did. It is a testament that being vulnerable is fruitful."

- Angelica Negron, Composer

[Arts & Entertainment]  The Hermitage Surprises Composer Angelica Negron with Greenfield Prize
Andrew Fabian, andrew.fabian@srqme.com

As Angélica Negrón sat in the Zoom waiting room, the composer and multi-instrumentalist had no idea what awaited her when she joined the chat. A finalist for the prestigious $30,000 Greenfield Prize that includes a 6-week residency at The Hermitage, she was led to believe she was in the waiting room with the other three finalists and that the announcement would be made with all finalists together in the chat. But The Hermitage’s artistic director and CEO, Andy Sandberg, has a flair for the dramatic.

“She doesn’t actually know that she’s already won,” said Sandberg to the nearly 100 guests that joined in for the virtual announcement ceremony.

When Sandberg finally let Negrón into the chat and made the announcement, her shock and jubilation manifested themselves as a touching moment of vulnerability. “This definitely caught me off guard,” she said, “and this is my first time crying on Zoom.”

The Puerto Rican-born Negrón, who lives in New York City, composes music for accordions, robotic instruments, toys and electronics as well as for chamber ensembles and orchestras. Her musical compositions span genres and aesthetics, ranging all the way from stripped down piano pieces to quirky, avant garde soundscapes comprised of dings, scratches and white noise.

Of her work’s artistic and cultural significance, those in virtual attendance got a rare chance to meet three jurors involved in Negron’s selection, and juror Terrance McKnight described it best. “Angelica’s music places value on the softest, most vulnerable instruments in the room,” he said. “In her scores, even the robots have a pulse. Her compositional insight is the heartbeat of true democracy.”

For Negron, who remained emotional for the duration of her time on screen, McKnight’s comments echo the spirit in which she received the award. “I’m just so moved to know that [my interview] resonated,” she says. “I was really excited about what I proposed, but I didn’t know how I did. It’s a testament that being vulnerable is fruitful.”

Negron begins her residency later this year and is set to compose a piece intended to be played as the sun sets. The composition will be inspired by the sun’s low-frequency sounds as captured by NASA.

[New Director]  The Players Centre Hires New Artistic Director

The Players Centre for Performing Arts is thrilled to announce the hiring of their new artistic director, Lee Gundersheimer. The 92-year-old organization looks forward to growing through Gundersheimer’s strong skill set cultivated over many years and in various areas of the theatre. He will begin January 18, to overlap the departure of 15-year producing artistic director, Jeffery Kin. Gundersheimer is excited to be back in Florida where he began his theatre career over 40 years ago. Raised in Miami, Lee is a graduate of the BFA program in Theatre at Florida State University and received his Actor’s Equity Card before graduating college as one of the original apprentices at the Burt Reynold’s Dinner Theatre in Jupiter, Fl. where he worked onstage with Sally Field, Martin Sheen, and Carol Burnett among others. Gundersheimer was based in New York City for many years and built his first theater on the upper westside, Avalon Rep, before he was 30. He then helped plan, build, and was the Producing Director of the Century Center for the Performing Arts in Union Square, where two Pulitzer Prize winning plays had their off-Broadway commercial runs. All the while working professionally, Gundersheimer taught academically in multiple universities, and for 10 years was the Industry Liaison for the Tisch School of the Arts at New York University.

[Children's Services]  Child Protection Center Expanding in South County

As the population in South Sarasota County continues to grow at a rapid pace, the area has seen a simultaneous increase in the need for child abuse services. To meet this growing need, the Child Protection Center (CPC) has recently closed on a new property and building in North Port.  From the year 2000 through 2020, the population of North Port grew by 213%- almost ten times more than Sarasota and Venice in the same time frame. The area is also a popular space for families, with school aged children and adolescents making up 22% of the population and a median age of 46. As the demand for CPC's services has been steadily increasing alongside the population growth, the pandemic greatly exacerbated the problem- in the early months of the pandemic, the center's Child Protection Team reported an over 23% increase in child sexual abuse. More recently, a waiting list of verified victims of child abuse in need of therapy grew to over 70 children. "The need is clear," said Doug Staley, the Executive Director of the nonprofit. "There are children requiring immediate access to our services, and it's our responsibility to protect them. No child should ever have to wait for treatment." Local philanthropist Graci McGillicuddy, one of CPC's most dedicated supporters over her 35 year history of involvement, joined in full support upon hearing the announcement. "Our dream is to one day transform this building into a children's museum because child abuse will no longer exist," she said. She went on to credit CPC's staff on their expertise in the field and their dedication to the mission. Renovations on the building will begin as quickly as possible with a goal of opening for services by summer.

[Building Design]  Architecture Sarasota Announces 2022 Season

Architecture Sarasota has announced its 2022 Winter/Spring programming season, inspiring audiences about the merits of good design and celebrating Sarasota’s stature as a globally-recognized city of design. Earlier this week, The New York Times named the organization among  “52 Places for a Changed World.”  The Times article recognizes Architecture Sarasota’s role in promoting and protecting “…the most spectacular concentration of Modernist buildings east of the Mississippi.”  The annual list recognizes global destinations where visitors can be part of the solution to problems like over-tourism and climate change, which aligns well with the mission of Architecture Sarasota. This year’s Winter/Spring Architecture Sarasota program features a Modern Architecture 101 series, which explores the hallmarks of Modernism: new materials, new techniques, new ideas, and new cultural influences at the intersection of the Industrial Revolution, the colonial project and the expansion of class participation in cultural production. Given the ongoing challenges of Covid, Architecture Sarasota has created a series of en plein air and Covid-conscious events to enjoy this season, including yoga at Paul Rudolph’s iconic Umbrella House and architecture tours via kayak. Lovers of both culture and nature will enjoy viewing architecture from the water with both design experts and naturalists. Other events include guided tours of The Vision of Philip Hiss exhibition at the William Rupp and Joe Farrell designed Scott Building, headquarters of Architecture Sarasota, and monthly Iconic Homes Tours, providing an in-depth look at some of Sarasota’s most significant Modern houses.
