[Philanthropy]  Region Celebrates GivingTuesday and the Holiday Season of Giving
Brittany Mattie, brittany.mattie@srqme.com

Yesterday marked GivingTuesday's 10th year—a decade of celebrating the global humanity network that reminds us that everyone has something to give, and every act of generosity counts. Though a year-round initiative, the simple idea of giving comes to real light on the first Tuesday following the Thanksgiving holiday—a day dedicated to encouraging people to do good. Over the years—and especially in philanthropic-forward locales such as Sarasota-Manatee—GivingTuesday has grown into a collaborative worldwide movement that inspires hundreds of millions of people to show kindness and celebrate generosity in their community and beyond.

With 150 local nonprofits registered members with the Sarasota Chamber of Commerce, and over 4,000 more nonprofits and 501c3 organizations in Sarasota County alone, there's no surprise we've nicknamed this altruistic region 'The Giving Coast'. And yesterday's GivingTuesday (#GivingTuesday) saw no shortage of giving from Sarasotans and Manateeans—with many organizations announcing dollar-for-dollar matches and doubling the impact of gifts.

"We are blown away by our amazing community!" said Child Protection Center (CPC). "We are deeply appreciative for everyone joining us on GivingTuesday and bringing such hope through their generosity and kindness. It's invigorating to know how many children will have the resources to begin their path of healing."

"We are so grateful for our supporters this giving season!" shared ALSO Youth. "Whether it is $5 or $500, your contribution directly and positively impacts the lives of LGBTQ+ youth."

"The gift you give not only goes twice as far but goes to work immediately," said Cat Depot, "enabling us to help thousands of cats get the care they need annually. Thank you for keeping Cat Depot in your minds and on your heart as the season for giving gets underway."

Beyond monetary donatations to great causes, the 10th annual GivingTuesday movement called-to-action small acts of kindness that certainly count too. From helping out a neighbor or colleague, volunteering at a toy or food drive and advocating for an important issue, to sharing a skill, lending a listening ear or planning a fundraiser, every kind of act of goodwill brought the community together yesterday—whether in-person or virtually. And will make an impact not just on a Tuesday, but rounding out these last 31 sleeps of 2021 and setting the tone for the coming new year.

If you're looking for local nonprofits to support, want to stay up-to-date on grant opportunities and events this giving season, Manatee Community FoundationThe Community Foundation of Sarasota County and Gulf Coast Community Foundation are great resources to utilize.

"We think of our donors as family. And we work closely with our family of donors to ensure that their generous gifts have the most impact possible," said Kirstin Fulkerson, Senior VP for Philanthropy at Gulf Coast Community Foundation. "This time of year, many of our donors give to Gulf Coast to replenish their funds to maximize their charitable dollars and minimize taxes. Our hard-working, local nonprofit partners benefit and receive grants from our donors year-round. We are so grateful for our big, generous family that transforms our region through their philanthropy!"

[Fundraiser]  Temple Emanu-El Presents Sapphire Celebration

On February 27, 2022, Temple Emanu-El will present its 65th anniversary Sapphire Celebration, honoring Rabbi Elaine Rose Glickman for her many contributions to the temple’s growth and vibrance. The goal for the fundraising event is to raise $150,000; proceeds will be used for the Religious School, Susan Schwaid Early Learning Center, and temple enhancements.

Since the Glickmans arrived in Sarasota in 2006, as Rabbi Brenner Glickman assumed the post of Senior Rabbi, Rabbi Elaine Glickman has contributed tremendously to the building of community – particularly among the fast-growing family population – among the congregation, presented innumerable parent and adult education offerings, greatly expanded community service offerings, and provided skilled and effective public relations services on behalf of the congregation. “When you look at our temple’s growth and success since the Glickmans’ arrival 15 years ago, it is impossible to imagine that any of it would have been possible without Rabbi Elaine’s dedication, passion and participation on nearly every front,” said Temple Emanu-El President Barry Gerber. "As a devoted member, Rabbi Elaine has served as a role model to our congregants. As a virtuous person, she provides her sacred work to the temple from the kindness of her heart."

The Sapphire Celebration takes place on Sunday, February 27, 11 am at the Benderson Family Hall of Temple Emanu-El (151 McIntosh Rd., Sarasota). Brunch will be catered by Michael’s On East. Tickets are $75/person; sponsorships and tribute book ads are available. Call 847-331-8518 for sponsorships and ads; visit sarasotatemple.org for tickets.

[SOON]  GRAB BAG: Sarasota County Sheriff's Office 5th Annual Holiday Toy Drive , December 1 – December 12, 7am-7pm

Sheriff Kurt A. Hoffman is pleased to announce the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office is hosting its fifth annual holiday toy drive benefitting the 12th Judicial Circuit of Florida’s Guardian ad Litem program. There are currently more than 1,300 children from throughout Sarasota, Manatee and DeSoto counties who have been removed from their homes due to abuse or neglect and as such, appointed a Guardian ad Litem. Because the children range in age from newborn to 18 years old with varying personal needs, the sheriff’s office has chosen to focus the holiday initiative solely on toys and gift cards. Citizens are asked to refrain from donating clothing or stuffed animals and to make sure all donations are new and unwrapped. The initiative begins Wednesday, December 1 and continues until Sunday, December 12. Citizens can deliver donations to the agency’s headquarters located at 6010 Cattleridge Boulevard, Sarasota, every day between 7am and 7pm. The initiative launched in 2017 when the agency moved into its new headquarters facility on Cattleridge Boulevard in Sarasota. To date, with help from agency members, residents, local businesses and organizations, the sheriff’s office has donated more than 7,000 gifts including $20,000 in gift cards to the Guardian ad Litem program. Thanks to a partnership with the Sarasota Memorial Hospital Public Safety Department, public safety personnel are once again generously donating a holiday tree which will serve as the collection site for the toy drive. The tree will be delivered to the sheriff’s office headquarters on Monday, November 29 at 11am.
