[Politics]  Moore, Sibley face Off in Venice City Council Contest
Jacob Ogles, jacob.ogles@srqme.com

It’s an off year for most of the political world, but Venice will have two City Council races decided in November. Then, Councilwoman Helen Kirchner Moore faces a challenge by Sandy Sibley. Both sell real estate in the Venice area, and now compete against one another in a different market— this one of ideas and visions for the city’s future.

Both agree the future of growth and development in the city should be the top concern of voters this year. Moore, who served on the Planning Commission for five years before her election to the Council in 2018, said the city’s implementation of land development regulations will benefit from knowledge and experience of the city’s comprehensive plan. She helped with the last update of that plan and wants ideas realized in full. “What comes with experience is you know what you can and cannot do,” she said.

But Sibley said Moore can do more all around. Beyond suggesting Moore spoke up little at meetings to make any thoughts on growth known, Sibley said the city should reconsider changes that will allow higher buildings downtown and compromise the character of the community. “I’m always listening to people’s concerns and comments about Venice, and it would be fantastic to bring those to the Council,” she said.

Moore notably believes there’s misinformation about those height restrictions. The land development regulation could add inches to maximum building heights downtown, she said, but would come with a reduction in variances and special exceptions. That means the city should end up with a more clear and even more strict set of rules for construction. But Sibley said even allowing buildings one more extra floor will change the entire look of the downtown, never mind the potential for destroying historic buildings as developers try and maximize the use of the land. She also said new development threatens the beach downtown with environmental hazards.

“We need to maintain what we have right now,” Sibley said.

Moore said what needs preservation is the city’s fiscal health. “We are financially in really good shape,” she said. “In the last 10 years there has been progress and our budget is solid.”

Sibley and Moore face each other for the Seat 3 post on the City Council. The winner of the Nov. 2 election will serve a three-year term.

[ShopTalk]  From Wax to Wick with Blossom & Burn Co.
Chloe Cuyler. chloe@srqme.com

Gone are the days when candles were mere sticks of wax, simply used to illuminate a room. So much more today, candles are part of our daily routines. Their therapeutic fragrances can give us an early morning pick-me-up or help us to unwind after a stressful day. When it comes to something that plays such an important role in our mental and emotional wellbeing, we deserve the best. Blossom and Burn Co. gets it. A female, Native American-owned candle company operating out of Bradenton, founder and maker Lindsay Wood crafts candles that provide an attention-worthy centerpiece for your home, all while keeping it free of harmful chemicals. Armed with a mission to create non-toxic yet stylish candles that you can enjoy and feel safe using, Wood hand-pours Blossom & Burn’s candles in small batches of 100% non-GMO soy wax—free of lead, parabens, zinc and phthalates.

If you’re eager and ready for your beloved autumnal scents already, Wood recently announced the launch of her Fall-scented candles which include Pumpkin Spice, Apple Cider Donut, Autumn Bonfire, Hello Fall and more. These new candles can come in her original clear glass jars, or, her new modern, colored clay vessels made by Chasing Stone and The Wooden Wick Co. And if you’re looking for a less seasonal, more ubiquitous scent, Wood recommends her best-seller: Hello Sunshine. This scent contains notes of citrus, mandarin, and grapefruit. What better way to start or end a day in the Sunshine State than with a jar of solid sunshine?

[Architecture]  Architecture Sarasota's MOD Weekend Honors Legacy of Philip Hiss

Architecture Sarasota recently announced the schedule for Sarasota MOD Weekend, November 12-14, which will honor Philip Hanson Hiss, the primary catalyst of the modern architecture movement in Sarasota. The three-day event will celebrate Hiss’s forward-thinking ideas and how they gave rise to the origins of the Sarasota School of Architecture (SSA). The festivities kick off Thursday with a private VIP Champagne reception for Architecture Sarasota Circle level Members. Friday night welcomes guests to the Party Under the Banyan Tree at Hiss Studio, Saturday begins with the morning Symposium and an afternoon of walking, trolley and kayak tours. The inaugural Hiss Dinner on Saturday night celebrates the launch of Architecture Sarasota and The Hiss Award, and the tours continue on Sunday.

Philip Hiss was the pioneering developer behind Lido Shores, where he used knowledge of life in the global tropics to lead a group of emerging architects to create innovative designs well suited to this environment. Hiss expanded his architecture patronage by leading the Sarasota County Schools building program, which Time Magazine celebrated in their pages in 1958. He then went on to be a founder of New College, where he secured I.M. Pei to build dorms for the new school.

“Celebrating the legacy of Philip Hiss—the man who made Sarasota Modern—gives us the opportunity to share the origin story of the Sarasota School of Architecture. Hiss’ massive contributions to our community—intellectually, creatively, aesthetically—are but a microcosm of his impact nationally as a thought leader engaging with forward-thinking colleagues across the country, from Alfred Barr to Walter Paepcke to Margaret Mead,” said Anne-Marie Russell, Executive Director of Architecture Sarasota. “His visionary pedagogy wove the discourse of technology, education and design together in a way that presciently helped pave the way for future initiatives. His rich and varied contributions, including his war-time service, provide extraordinary inspiration to us all."

Ticket sales to the general public begins Monday, September 27, and advance tickets sales to Members begin Monday, September 20. For a detailed schedule and programming visit sarasotaMOD.org

[Science]  Coastal Orthopedics Research Assists with FDA Approval for SCS Treatment of PDN

Coastal Orthopedics, an orthopedic surgery practice whose physicians specialize in orthopedics and pain management, alongside surgical device vendor Nevro Corp., recently announced the receipt of FDA approval of a Spinal Cord Stimulation (SCS) treatment of Painful Diabetic Neuropathy (PDN). Specifically, the approval is for Nevro’s 10kHz stimulation and is now the only SCS system approved by the FDA with a specific indication to treat PDN for long-term relief.

Prior to receiving FDA approval for this new system, Coastal Orthopedics’ Dr. Richard H. Bundschu, and Dr. Gennady Gekht, pain management specialists, together with the research department at the practice took part in the largest study to date for SCS treatment of PDN. This study focused on alternate treatment options as Dr. Bundschu and Dr. Gekht recognized that there was a need to change the way patients were treated for this condition since neuropathic pain medications can lead to significant side effects.

“People with chronic PDN know it is a cruel addition to the chronic disease they have to fight daily,” said Dr. Bundschu. “This new treatment is a comprehensive solution that includes the insertion of the Senza spinal cord stimulation system into the patient in a minimally invasive procedure. It delivers mild pulses at a high frequency directly to the spinal cord to stop pain signals from reaching the brain. There is no other treatment or therapy like this, so having the ability to offer it to my Bradenton and Sarasota patients is an incredible opportunity.”

[SOON]  FILM: The Ringling: On Screen: Trash Dance , September 9, 1pm

¸Choreographer Allison Orr finds beauty and grace in garbage trucks, and in the unseen men and women who pick up our trash. Filmmaker Andrew Garrison follows Orr as she rides along with Austin, Texas sanitation workers on their daily routes to observe and later convince them to perform a most unlikely spectacle. On an abandoned airport runway, two dozen trash collectors and their trucks deliver — for one night only — a stunningly beautiful and moving performance, in front of an audience of thousands. This On Screen will show on September 9 at 1pm at Historic Asolo Theater.

[SOON]  FILM: The Ringling: On Screen: Waste Land , September 10, 6:30pm

Filmed over nearly three years, WASTE LAND follows renowned artist Vik Muniz as he journeys from his home base in Brooklyn to his native Brazil and the world's largest garbage dump, Jardim Gramacho, located on the outskirts of Rio de Janeiro. There he photographs an eclectic band of “catadores”—self-designated pickers of recyclable materials. Muniz’s initial objective was to “paint” the catadores with garbage. However, his collaboration with these inspiring characters as they recreate photographic images of themselves out of garbage reveals both the dignity and despair of the catadores as they begin to re-imagine their lives. Director Lucy Walker (DEVIL’S PLAYGROUND, BLINDSIGHT and COUNTDOWN TO ZERO) and co-directors João Jardim and Karen Harley have great access to the entire process and, in the end, offer stirring evidence of the transformative power of art and the alchemy of the human spirit. This On Screen will show on September 10 at 6:30pm.
