A new leader will take over at the Economic Development Corporation of Sarasota County. The EDC’s board of directors voted on Thursday to hire Lisa Krouse as the interim CEO.
“We will be focused on the strategic direction and future of the EDC, working with our Board, community stakeholders and diverse business community,” Krouse said. “There have been many local leaders who have made a major investment in the EDC and we want to see that this important work continues.”
Krouse will take over from Dave Bullock, the former Longboat Key Town Manager tapped to run the economic development agency in December 2019. Bullock has always made clear he did not intend to serve for years, and plans to retire after June 30.
“It’s been humbling to serve the past year and half, knowing almost 1,500 businesses were helped and thousands of local workers kept their jobs due in part to the work done at the EDC,” Bullock said. “I know the community is appreciative of these efforts.”
Krouse has long been a leader within Sarasota’s business community. She recently retired as executive vice president and chief administrative officer at FCCI Insurance Group, consistently a top employer in the region. More recently, she has served as board chair at the EDC, and will step down from that position to take on duties as interim CEO.
Charlie Murphy now takes over as board chair, and expressed confidence in Krouse. “We’re fortunate that someone as capable as Lisa Krouse is willing to step up at this important moment for the EDC,” he said. “We’ll need a steady hand for the changes moving forward and she offers just that.”
Notably, Krouse will still hold the title of interim, much as Bullock.
”I appreciate the commitment the Board has extended to this organization and I am looking forward to their help in facilitating a successful transition,” she said. 
Goodwill Manasota has formed a Philanthropic Advisory Council to ensure its sustainability for years to come. The new leadership body will assist in articulating Goodwill’s mission to the community, advise on how Goodwill might address community needs, engage with philanthropic donors, participate in fundraising, and introduce Goodwill to other potential Council members. The members of the Council are: Goodwill Board members Rae Dowling and Eric Kaplan, Michael and Victoria Zeppi, Lori Abrams, MD, and Kevin Henault. Goodwill CEO Bob Rosinsky, Vice President Margie Genter, and Community Outreach & Development Manager Pavitra Ciavardone support the effort, which had its first official meeting in February.
The recently completed Lido Beach renourishment project has earned national recognition, landing on the American Shore and Beach Preservation Association’s annual list of the country’s best restored beaches. “This year’s restored beach award winners represent a variety of beach types, and I congratulate them for the hard work and beautiful beaches they have protected and enhanced,” said ASBPA President Tony Pratt. “For more than 50 years, beach restoration – the process of placing beach-quality sand on dwindling beaches to reverse or offset the effects of sand loss – has been the preferred method of shore protection in coastal communities, and the original living shoreline approach to addressing coastal erosion.”

The Players Studio (TPS), the education department of The Players Centre for Performing Arts, is proud to announce this year’s summer camps. TPS has six one-week minicamps perfect for ages 5 to 10 starting in June and running through the end of July. These camps focus on acting, dancing, and singing, all related to a theme. Each week there is a different, exciting topic for students to enjoy. Campers also create characters, make crafts, use their imagination and work with other students to present a short performance on the last day. Disney Fairytales from June 21-25: Life is a fairytale, and you are the main character. Learn how to craft the perfect fairytale story and perform numbers from Disney musicals. Marvel Heroes from June 28-July 2: Capes and masks are all part of this creative storytelling camp. Using the power of imagination students can create their own superhero that saves the world through dance, song and scenes. Pirates & Mermaids from July 5-9: Ahoy, matey. Students will have fun acting out scenes and songs from Pirates of the Caribbean, Peter Pan and The Little Mermaid, among others. Vampires & Zombies from July 12-16: Are you more of a zombie or more of a vampire? Learn stage makeup, design your own monsters, and dance to songs like Thriller and Time Warp. Under the Sea from July 19-23: Spend this week under the sea learning songs and dance from Finding Nemo, Moana and The Little Mermaid. Star Wars from July 26-30: Learn to use the Force through creative dramatics with basic stage combat techniques to stage an epic battle. (Includes a take-home practice light saber.) One-week minicamps are limited to 20 students and cost $160 for the whole week, this includes a t-shirt. Students should bring their own lunches. On Wednesday campers can purchase pizza and ice cream. More information will be available after registration. Before and after care are available, as well as financial assistance. Masks are required.
Directed by Tim Burton, and starring Colin Farrell, Michael Keaton and Danny DeVito, this 2019 remake of a beloved tale brings takes baby Dumbo to new heights will play on June 24 at 1pm at the Historic Asolo Theater. Struggling circus owner Max Medici enlists a former star and his two children to care for Dumbo, a baby elephant born with oversized ears. When the family discovers that the animal can fly, it soon becomes the main attraction, bringing in huge audiences and revitalizing the run-down circus. The elephant's magical ability also draws the attention of V.A. Vandevere, an entrepreneur who wants to showcase Dumbo in his latest, larger-than-life entertainment venture. Dumbo is rated PG and is 1 hr 52 min. Admission to the Circus Museum is only an additional $5 with your ticket to this film, DUMBO. Seating will allow for social distancing. In the event of rising COVID cases or safety concerns this event is subject to be moved outdoors or canceled. Ticket holders will be notified upon any changes made and refunded if the screening is canceled. Tickets are $15 for adults, $13.50 for adult members, $10 for students, $5 and children.
