A self-taught Swiss-born artist, Alissa "Liss" Silvers, may always call Münchwilen home, but she has since transplanted to Sarasota to continue her works of art that are now displayed in both private and public collections in the USA and Switzerland. The backbone of her creations reflects “an intimate expression of the unique individuals she has met and the diverse places in which she has lived and traveled.”
Known for her combination of abstract art, brand identity designs and evocative portrait illustrations, her colorful and expressive art naturally aligns with the mission behind Project PRIDE SRQ , a local organization born out of the notion to unite, celebrate and support the LGBTQ+ people in the community. Coming up this month for Gay Pride Month is the 1st annual ONE LOVE charity event and silent art auction, sponsored by Project PRIDE. Liss Art & Design announced she will be featured at the event and will be donating 100% of the proceeds from the painting pictured above if sold, and 20% of her proceeds from other artwork sold at the event to the nonprofit.

Come out and meet Silvers, celebrate Gay Pride Month and get to know the series of initiatives Project PRIDE has planned for 2021 and beyond. Sabal Palm Bank will be providing the venue for ONE LOVE, held in Downtown Sarasota on Saturday, June 19, 2021, from 6pm-9pm. In addition to the silent art auction, this free event will feature merchandise, live music, snacks, wine and an interactive art exhibit.

Meet the new Executive Director, Amanda Griffin. A native of St. Petersburg, she graduated from Florida State University with a degree in Family and Child Sciences. Amanda has always loved children and making people smile. Her time at the Children’s Dream Fund began with an internship, and that’s when she felt she found her home.
In an effort to share knowledge and resources, and strengthen the infrastructure of the Black theatre landscape in the United States, seven of the country’s freestanding, independent Black theatres – including Westcoast Black Theatre Troupe (WBTT) – have forged a new alliance. The National Association of Black Theatre Building Owners (NABTBO) will work together to ensure there are stages where Black voices take center stage and are heard by diverse audiences. “The distinction between our spaces and the varied Black theatre companies, festivals and collegiate programs that are responsible for the consistent amplification of Black voices is measured solely in brick and mortar,” said WBTT Founder/Artistic Director Nate Jacobs. “The latter community can assist Black playwrights as they develop and stage their work in spaces that mirror their cultural perspective and background. Our theatres provide spaces where diverse audiences can regularly enjoy the results of these artistic endeavors.”
This summer, Art Center Sarasota is once again encouraging young children and teens to set their inner artists free at its weekly summertime art camps. These immersive sessions run June 14-August 6. The programs target two different age groups: Creative Kids serves children, ages 6-10; Emerging Arts is for aspiring artists, ages 11 to 15. The camps are Mondays through Fridays, 9:30am to 3pm. Art Center Sarasota is also looking for teens, 15 and over, to volunteer as teaching and after-care assistants. Volunteer hours count towards high school and Bright Futures and National Honor Society requirements.

Sarasota Opera announced today that Richard Russell’s contract has been extended through the 2025–26 season, and that his job title will change from Executive Director to General Director to better reflect the breadth of his responsibilities with the company. Russell will continue to collaborate with Artistic Director and Principal Conductor Victor DeRenzi in the planning of upcoming seasons.

In between getting trapped in a lion's cage and partaking in clumsy high wire escapades, he falls for a beautiful show rider (Merna Kennedy), who unfortunately has eyes for a daring tightrope acrobat. Florida Studio Theatre opens its Summer Mainstage Series on June 2 and will run through July 7 with one of the most popular shows FST has produced to-date, Sophie Tucker: The Last of the Red Hot Mamas, featuring FST favorite Kathy Halenda. Created by Halenda along with the late Venice-based playwright Jack Fournier, Sophie Tucker tells the thrilling story of the legendary trend-setter who made waves in the first half of the 20th century with her dynamic performances of comedic and bawdy songs.
