Gov. Ron DeSamtis swung through Sarasota to promote $1,000 bonus checks issued to educators across the state in recognition of working in the pandemic. While speaking at Sarasota School of Arts and Sciences, a charter school, he stressed the money would go to those working at traditional public schools and public charter schools.
“Principals and teachers across Florida understood the importance of getting kids back to school in person,” he said. “Virtual education quite frankly just doesn’t cut it.”
Teachers expressed gratitude. They also shared stories making clear they have worked to serve both students who came back to classrooms in the fall and those who remained at home for remote learning. Around 85% of students now have returned to on-campus instruction.
“As teachers we are used to adapting to any situation thrown at us,” said Kathleen Ferry, a 7th Grade team leader at SSAS. This year, that involved teaching students in-person and at home simultaneously. “Teachers and families, we did this and we adapted and we are resilient.”
Kevin Corwin, a math teacher and department head, noted that was done by many teachers himself included, while also dealing with education of their own children at home. He has children attending five schools in Sarasota or Manatee County and worked directly with some 75 educators professionally or personally.
A number of other elected officials and administration leaders joined DeSantis for the event at the Sarasota School. Chief Financial Officer Jimmy Patronis, in town already to meet with other local officials, attended the event. Sens. Joe Gruters and Jim Boyd also stood by the governor along with Reps. Tommy Gregory and Fiona McFarland. Superintendent Brennan Asplen also joined the governor for the event.
Education Commissioner Richard Corcoran also talked up the state’s decision to require districts this year to offer in-person learning five days a week. “We had a leader who said, despite all the onslaught, we will open our schools,” Corcoran said.

Manatee County is accepting applications for seven seats on the Affordable Housing Advisory Committee, a volunteer committee that makes recommendations to County Commissioners to encourage or facilitate affordable housing. Applications are due June 18 and may be completed online.
Ringling College of Art and Design today announced that the Daniel E. Offutt, III Charitable Trust has made a $500,000 gift in support of the Richard and Barbara Basch Visual Arts Center including the Wood Shop, which will be named the Daniel E. Offutt III Wood Shop. It also establishes the Daniel E. Offutt III Endowed Scholarship which will furnish an annual scholarship of at least $7,500 beginning in Fall 2022, and will provide an additional one-time scholarship for a student this fall, who will be the College’s first Offutt Scholar.
Manatee County Commissioners yesterday confirmed Dr. Scott Hopes as their official County Administrator, deciding to remove the "acting" designation he has held since he was originally hired on April 1.
For 14 years, the Summer BreakSpot program has been providing nourishment for children during the long summer months. This program provides free meals (lunch and breakfast for the next day) for kids and teens at multiple locations starting on June 1st, 2021. Food & Nutrition Services will also have drive-through sites at four schools, Monday – Friday, serving 11am – 12pm. Quick Grab n’ Go meals will be available for those who drive or walk up. Children can receive meals at any of the four locations: Bayshore High, Buffalo Creek Middle, Haile Middle and King Middle.

Drawing inspiration from audience suggestions, FST Improv’s cast members create scenes and musical numbers that celebrate—and poke fun at—all things “Sarasota.” Beginning June 5, FST Improv will perform Life’s a Beach every Saturday at 7:30pm in FST’s Bowne’s Lab. This vibrant bio drama recounts the life and times of Rafael Padilla Chocolat, who escaped a legacy of slavery in Cuba to become the first Black stage performer in France. Performing a lead role in a circus pantomime act in Paris, Chocolat shot to stardom with his partner, Charles Footit, a white clown. Starring Omar Sy and James Thiérrée, the film’s potent and adventurous casting and art direction entertains and expands our circus knowledge while it reflects on historical realities of race and the entertainment industry. The film will play at the Historic Asolo Theatre on June 3 at 1pm. 2016, French – subtitles, Rated PG-13 and 1 hr 59 minute duration. This documentary concert film, which will play at the Historic Asolo Theatre on June 4 at 6:30pm, captures the sounds and performances of some of the major jazz artists at the 1958 Newport Jazz Festival. Unlike earlier jazz movies that had been filmed in smoky black and white, this is shot in vibrant color. While musicians such as Louis Armstrong, Thelonious Monk, Anita O'Day and Mahalia Jackson perform, images of beaches, sailboats on water, dancing couples and the faces of joyful audience members are intercut into the proceedings. Regarded by many as Mozart’s opera seria masterpiece, La Clemenza di Tito was composed in the summer of 1791—a few months before Mozart’s death—as a commission for the coronation of Emperor Leopold II as King of Bohemia in Prague. He supposedly composed the opera in just 18 days. This production is from the Zürich Opera House, conducted by Frans Welser-Möst with stage direction by Jonathan Miller, starring Jonas Kaufmann, Eva Mei, Vesselina Kasarova, Malin Hartelius, Liliana Nikiteanu, and Günther Groissböck.
