Freshly Squeezed Content Every Morning
"Sometimes it feels like a journey that'll never end, but then you take a look back and realize you've come further than you ever thought you could."
As the mysterious off-camera (and presumably off-world) voice whispers in Field of Dreams: “if you build it, he will come.” And the protagonist, a poor but hardworking farmer and family man played by Kevin Costner, proceeds to build a baseball field in the middle of his Iowa cornfield, convinced by the voice that something magical will happen in the middle of nowhere if he just believes in some vague, unformed notion. This is all a long-winded way of establishing a parallel with The Spot Tacos and More.
Located down the road from Red Barn in what used to be the lobby for a motel, the proprietors of The Spot, like Costner’s character, took a chance on the belief that something special would happen in the middle of nowhere, situated in an unorthodox space a stone’s throw away from an overpass. But they built it, and he (me) came. He had the Saturday special of three birria tacos and a cup of consommé.
Birria, similar in ingredients and flavor profile to the more recognizable barbacoa beef, is a meat stew made traditionally for special occasions across Mexico, most notably in the state of Jalisco. When the meat from the stew is used in tacos, the tortillas are dipped in the broth to soak up some of the fat and flavor, then seared on a flat top until crispy. The result is a taco halfway between soft and hard shell, with crispy burnt parts here and there that add a hint of the Maillard reaction that makes toasted bread so delicious. Of course, the beef inside the taco, marinated and cooked in the tangy, slightly spicy broth, is tender and juicy. Topped with diced onions, cilantro, cheese and a squeeze of lime, these tacos are the reason The Spot took their chance on an odd location. These tacos will also ensure they thrive.

Venice Pier Group, which operates waterfront dining destinations Sharky’s on the Pier, Fins at Sharky’s and Snook Haven in Venice, Fla., has been awarded the Florida Restaurant and Lodging Association (FRLA) Seal of Commitment, a respected health, safety and sanitation honor. The Seal of Commitment is the FRLA’s highest designation for hospitality safety and sanitation standards. Bearing this seal is Sharky’s, Fins and Snook Haven’s pledge to their employees, guests and community that each restaurant meets and exceeds the FRLA’s designated health, safety and sanitation standards. Less than 70 restaurants in the state of Florida have received this recognition, and the Venice Pier Group restaurants are the first to receive this honor in Venice.

For those on the front lines of tragedy and violence - like veterans and first responders - the emotional impact of such service can be difficult to explain to others, including loved ones or friends. This was the case for Marine Lance Corporal Janos V. Lutz, who served in both Afghanistan and Iraq, and took his own life in 2013 due to the detrimental effects of PTSD and over-prescribed medication. His mother, Janine Lutz, was determined that his death would not be in vain; she felt compelled to create a vehicle through which other war veterans could, perhaps, be saved. In May of last year, Goodwill Manasota launched the local chapter of the "Lutz Buddy Up" program, through which military veterans and first responders can network and form bonds, and really talk about what they are going through. The ultimate goal is that a buddy in crisis could be connected to needed resources before it becomes a life or death emergency. In July, Lutz Buddy Up reconvened in person but meetings are now at the Disabled American Veterans facility on Bee Ridge Road so that attendees can spread out a bit more. As Goodwill's Veterans Services Program Manager Todd Hughes (who is also a veteran) has said, "Getting together with like-minded brothers and sisters helps with the depression and loneliness. I'm so happy we started this group - we are changing lives!" The next meeting is Wednesday, September 16, 6pm at the DAV (7177 Bee Ridge Rd., Sarasota).
All Faiths Food Bank has been awarded $30,000 in Community Investment funding from United Way Suncoast – as well as additional funds from Feeding America – through United Way Suncoast’s Reducing Food Insecurity Program, in order to help provide SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) application assistance and food distribution to hungry people and families. With these grants, All Faiths has hired a new SNAP Outreach Specialist, Mia Pompey, who will provide support and assistance to clients applying for benefits. “We are proud to partner with All Faiths Food Bank in support of our community impact priority of financial stability,” said United Way Suncoast CEO Jessica Muroff. “Our community needs this support now more than ever. We look forward to the impact these dollars will make in serving individuals and families.”

On August 31, 2020, U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Sonny Perdue announced that the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) will be bringing back the Free Summer Meals program for all children, 18 and younger, through December 31, 2020. This program will allow the School District of Manatee County’s Food and Nutrition Services to serve free meals to all children into the fall months helping to ensure that children have access to nutritious food as Manatee County recovers from the COVID-19 pandemic.S tarting Monday, September 14th, ALL students who attend school five-days-a-week can get a free breakfast and free lunch every day at school through December 31st. No meal benefit application is needed during this time. Students attending on a Hybrid schedule can receive free breakfast and lunch on the days they are in school and take-home free breakfast and lunch for the three days they are out of school. Starting Monday, September 14th, eLearning Manatee students and all children, 18 and younger, can receive free breakfast and lunch for the school week available for curbside pick-up at any school on Mondays between 9:30am – 10:30am. Parents/guardians do not have to register for these meals they can simply drive up and pick up. These meals will contain frozen and refrigerated items. Tidewell Hospice has received a $10,000 grant from the Wilson-Wood Foundation, Inc. to support its Blue Butterfly Family Grief Center, an evidence-based program that helps grieving children, teens and caregivers through professional counseling, peer-support groups and activities. “The Blue Butterfly program provides stabilizing support to help children and families grieve, heal and live more successful lives,” said Tidewell Foundation President Debbie Mason. “We are incredibly grateful to donors who understand that dollars invested in these services may be key to preventing future mental health and behavioral issues.”

Music Compound is committed to educating all year long, even when school is out for the summer. In addition to hosting an in-person summer camp, Music Compound launched the "Rock Your Summer Reading" initiative on June 1. Music Compound partnered with area businesses to provide special treats, one-of-a-kind experiences, and cool items as prizes; area children received prizes for every five books they read. All of the children who read at least 50 books were entered into a drawing; Pine View eighth-grader Zoe Harrell - who read more than 55 books (before she stopped counting) - was recently selected as the winner. Harrell has won a private party for up to 25 at Music Compound’s Cattlemen location. Highlights will include karaoke, pizza, a bounce house donated by Let’s Jump Rentals, and cool treats donated by Kona Ice. “All three of my kids participated in Rock Your Summer Reading and it definitely motivated them to keep picking up new books," said proud mom Lora Harrell. "The prizes gave them something to look forward to during this weird home-bound summer. They always love competing with one another but Zoe took an early lead and never relinquished it. ”

Matthew McGee, a well-known performer in the Tampa/Sarasota area, will host ALSO Youth’s upcoming Virtual Variety Show “Better Together” on September 26th from 6:30 to 8:30. Mr. McGee has performed locally with the Asolo Rep, freeFall Theatre Company, Stageworks, American Stage in the Park, and the Suncoast AIDS Theatre Project. He is a two time Theatre Tampa Bay Award winner and a Broadway World’s Best Actor in a Musical winner. As part of Florida Studio Theatre’s Suffragist Project, an artistic celebration of the 100th Anniversary of the ratification of women’s right to vote, this stellar all-female quartet which includes Artist Series Concerts co-founder Lee Dougherty Ross, performs pieces by Fanny Mendelssohn, Clara Schumann, Amy Beach and Marion Bauer. The concert was filmed in July 2020 at Church of the Palms in Sarasota. Merz Trio, is a bold, new and fiercely creative ensemble that has been hailed as ‘impressive’ by the New York Times, and ‘impeccable’ by Fanfare Magazine. The South Florida Classical Review praised the trio for its ‘sense of joyful virtuosity.’ Formed in 2017, the group has already garnered numerous awards, including the top prizes at the 2019 Fischoff and Concert Artists Guild competitions and the gold medal and audience-favorite award at the 2018 Chesapeake Competitions. They are currently a professional ensemble in residence at the New England Conservatory. Hailed as “a star in the making,” violist Jordan Bak is quickly gathering acclaim as an artist of passion, energy and authenticity. Bak was also a top prize winner at the 2019 Artists Guild Competition and is just the third viola player in the history of the Juilliard School to be enrolled in the school’s prestigious Artist’s Diploma Program. He performs regularly at major venues and festivals, and with major orchestras and ensembles across the globe. The group’s program will include chamber works by Fauré and Brahms as well as other selections featuring viola and piano. This event will occur at 4pm on February 14, 2021.

Nostalgia can be a powerful trigger of emotions and memories, sometimes even invoking forgotten past events, places, and moments. Nostalgia also sells. Products replicating or calling back to the 1980’s and 1990’s have seen a surge (resurgence?) of popularity recently. These products are often marketed to younger generations who are fascinated with the decades, right along with the adults who actually owned the original items - or still do.
Dean photographs both the popular and old toys he still has from his childhood. Well-known toys that evoke nostalgia in others, the obscure tokens, and the items made by companies that no longer exist; all have histories which have been lost to time. In doing so, Dean found himself pondering the origins of the objects, who might have designed and created them, how many of them were made, the persistence of similar colors, and how many still exist. Over time, each object also picks up its own unique set of bumps and scratches, becoming tiny fragments of years that only grow more distant. Dean creates new art out of the mass-produced trinkets. He makes new memories out of the old, playing with color and shape; creating something for the viewer to enjoy looking through. Perhaps connecting with them as well by unlocking a buried snapshot of a distant time and place.

From Young Concert Artists comes one of the most versatile string quartets in classical music today. The Omer Quartet is quickly gaining a reputation for “fearless renderings” (the New York Times) of the standard quartet repertoire as well as compelling performances of works by today’s composers. The ensemble burst onto the scene with top prizes at Borciani, Trondheim, and Bordeaux in Europe all in one year, having already captured the Fischoff National Competition Grand Prize. The quartet was awarded first prize in the 2017 Young Concert Artists (YCA) International Auditions and recently debuted at Carnegie’s Weill Recital Hall. Joining the quartet from Young Concert Artists is accordion virtuoso Hanzhi Wang. Praised for her captivating stage presence and performances that are technically and musically masterful, this groundbreaking young musician is the only accordionist in 59 years to win a place on the YCA roster. 3pm Pre-Concert Wine Reception. Jennifer and Austin delighted judges and audience members alike at Artist Series Concerts’ 2016 National Voice Competition, where they took first and second place respectively. Fast-forward to 2020 and the duo, each now pursuing a busy music career, returns to Sarasota to perform together at the first soirée series concert of the organization’s 25th season. Soprano Jennifer Kreider is pursuing a performer’s diploma under the guidance of Jane Dutton at Indiana University’s Jacobs School of Music. Her past roles include Musetta (La Bohème), Dew Fairy (Hansel and Gretel), Linfea (La Calisto) and many others. She has been a young artist at Opera in the Ozarks, the CoOPERAtive Program in Princeton, New Jersey, and the Franz Schubert Institute in Baden bei Wien, Austria. A native of Brandon, Florida, tenor Austin Cripe is currently pursuing his master’s degree at Florida State University. He has performed with Florida State Opera in the roles of Gastone in La Traviata, King Kaspar in Amahl and the Night Visitors, the title role in Candide and others. He has also performed with Red River Lyric Opera, the Savannah Voice Festival and Opera Tampa. Tickets are $53.
The third annual summer glass show, In Dialogue with Nature: Glass in the Gardens, opens Saturday, August 8 at the Downtown Sarasota campus. This year, nature-inspired glasswork, exclusively created by Duncan McClellan and his studio artists, will embellish the Tropical Conservatory and Koi Pond against a backdrop of lush flowers and plants. Many spectacular pieces will also be on view in the Museum of Botany & the Arts. The botanically-themed glassworks will be available for sale with a significant portion of the proceeds benefiting Selby Gardens’ mission.
