"I want to be a voice and a vessel for those who feel forgotten."
As a music therapist, Kyshona Armstrong used the power of music to help her patients process their feelings. Now a singer-songwriter, her mission is the same even if her methods have changed. This Sunday, Sarasota will have an opportunity to witness this Nashville-based master of musical healing at the Fogartyville Community Media and Arts Center, where her storytelling, songs of redemption and self-love will lift spirits while reminding audience members that they are never alone.
“I want people to walk away feeling activated,” says Armstrong. She uses many of the stories she heard during her time as a therapist as inspiration for her lyrics. One of her songs, “Cornelius Dupree,” explores the emotional journey of a real-life man wrongly incarcerated for 30 years. In it, Armstrong speaks from the perspective of the wrongly accused, repeating simple, emotive mantras in search of grace in the face of a grave injustice. Like this song, the rest of her catalog carries the same sense of hope. “I want to be a voice and a vessel for those who feel forgotten,” she says, and that mission has translated into shows that often feel more like a revelation than entertainment.
Armstrong, who often serves as an opening act for more well-known bands, looks forward to opportunities like her TEDx shows in Nashville and Greenville, where she got to perform as the evening’s main attraction. “It’s nice to be able to play to strangers and catch them,” she says, “but Fogartyville is more of an event just for me.” And those wise enough to watch her this Sunday may find as much cathartic power in Armstrong’s humble acoustic act as they would in the most impassioned sermon. The doors open at 6 pm, music starts at 7. Food will be available from Leaf and Lentil’s food truck outfit.

It will likely be clear skies and sunshine this weekend, but don’t feel guilty seeking shelter inside the RAINE Studio. The quaint boutique space—which appears more like a mid-century modern home in the heart of Gillespie Park—is actually an indie hideaway for shopping funky necklaces, statement earrings, artisan clutches and cashmere apparel. Owner of the studio and designer/crafter of Raine Designs, Lorrie Dickinson, sources semi-precious beads found throughout the world, and either sterling silver or 14K gold filled wire for her one-of-a-kind pieces.
Dickinson is not only talented at bringing together beads on one wire, but also bringing together five local women designers to one show. This Sunday, an open house event dubbed ‘5 Women, 1 Show’ will feature not only Dickinson’s Raine Designs, but also unique table decor from Marlene Meyer of TableTop Jewels, fierce paintings and prints by Karen Chandler Fine Art, coastal-chic furnishings from Melodie Burrus of The Gathering Place, and finally, handmade ceramics by Marla Solomon Katz. Wine and cheese reception to follow the female-fueled shopping spree.

Melissa Gilbert, actress best known for her role as Laura Ingalls Wilder on the hit show Little House on the Prairie, will be the keynote speaker at Tidewell Hospice’s 11th Annual Signature Luncheon, scheduled this coming February.
An acting career spanning 45 plus years, Melissa has starred in over 50 television movies and feature films, including “Stand By Your Man;” “Sweet Justice,” which she also executive produced; and “Secrets and Lies.” She is the youngest person to receive a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Melissa moved behind the camera as a director and continued acting on the screen and stage. She served two terms as the 23rdPresident of the Screen Actors Guild, two terms as Vice President on the AFL-CIO Executive Council and was Vice President of the California Labor Federation.
As a children’s hospice advocate, Melissa decided to “dedicate my life to ensuring that all chronically and terminally ill children get to live and die with gentleness, dignity and the grace that they deserve.” She served as the President of the Board of Directors of Children’s Hospice and Palliative Care Coalition (CHPCC) beginning in 2007. In 2015, CHPCC joined The Coalition for Compassionate Care of California (CCCC) to develop a united voice in public policy at the state and national level. Melissa received the Humanitarian Leadership Award in 2008 from the National Hospice Foundation in recognition for her work on behalf of children facing life-limiting conditions. Today, Kyle Holbrook, Career and Technical Education program specialist for Sarasota County Schools, Tripp Jennings, assistant director of Career and Technical Education K-12 for Sarasota County Schools and various personnel from PGT Innovations will celebrate National Manufacturing Day with students involved with the Career and Technical Education (CTE) program from Pine View School, Riverview High School, Suncoast Polytechnical High School and Venice High School . CTE students will be touring PGT Innovations, one of Florida’s leading window and door manufacturers and Sarasota County’s largest private employer, and will witness product demonstrations, as well as interact with industry professionals to get a sense of a “typical day” in their career. Held annually on the first Friday in October, Manufacturing Day helps students understand modern manufacturing careers by encouraging thousands of companies and educational institutions around the nation to open their doors to students, teachers and the community alike for the investment of future innovators and creators.
GATES Construction is building The Strand Condominium, a new 4-story, 152 unit luxury mid-rise located steps from Downtown Sarasota. The new building will include gated access, private club room, fitness center, and resort-style pool. Among the unique luxury style amenities this Whitaker Bayou property offers its guests are a waterfront boardwalk, kayak launch, guest boat docks and a dog park. For those residents with watercraft, 47 private boat slips will be available. The project is slated for completion in the summer of 2021. Design Services are provided by Hoyt Architects.
October is nationally recognized as Domestic Violence Awareness Month, and the Manatee County Clerk of the Circuit Court and Comptroller is acknowledging the month by collecting and contributing books to benefit children visiting its Violence Protection division. Staff will also wear purple ribbons to help raise awareness. Donations to the book drive can be made to the Violence Protection division inside the Manatee County courthouse or at any of the Manatee County Clerk of Court’s historical sites, including the Florida Maritime Museum, Manatee County Agricultural Museum, Manatee County Historical Records Library, Manatee Village Historical Park and Palmetto Historical Park.

The Venice Youth Boating Association announces Ms. Kelley Severns has been appointed as Executive Director. She comes to VYBA from the St. Croix Yacht Club in the USVI where she has run the youth sailing programs there for the last two summers. She is a certified US Sailing small boat instructor and also holds many American Sailing Association (ASA) Keel Boat certifications. Ms. Severns spent 20 years as a program and project manager in the Bridge Engineering industry as a licensed professional engineer (PE) and a certified project management professional (PMP). She also has a love of teaching and has been a volunteer and professional teacher of Science Technology Math and Science (STEM) subjects previously at Vanderbilt University as well as Nashville Metro Schools, her previous home. Kelley is excited to serve the youth and sailing community in Venice, combining her management and non-profit experience with her love of teaching and sailing to fulfill the mission of VYBA.

The Manatee County Clerk of the Circuit Court and Comptroller is hosting Operation Green Light, a driver license reinstatement event, on Saturday, October 12 from 8:30am – noon and October 14 – October 18 from 8:30am – 4:30pm for individuals looking to save on fees and have their license reinstated. During Operation Green Light, Manatee County customers with suspended licenses will have an opportunity to pay overdue court obligations, including traffic tickets, and save up to 30 percent in additional fees. Customers may also be able to have suspended licenses reinstated. “Operation Green Light is a very large coordinated effort on the part of all Florida Clerks,” said Angel Colonneso, the Manatee County Clerk of the Circuit Court and Comptroller. “This initiative can help get residents back in the driver’s seat. Some Clerks, including our office, offer commonsense payment plans, allowing customers to comply with court obligations and keep their license.”
The Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles will be on site with their Florida Licensing On Wheels (FLOW) vehicle to print new licenses on Saturday, October 12 during the event. For more information, call 941-741-4003.

The 14th Main Stage Season will kick off with four performances, October 10-13, 2019, titled "Voices – Rising Choreographers," at which the local audience gets to see future choreographers of contemporary dance as they are just blossoming. The group is a combination of company members and guests invited to expand and set their work for the main stage. The Sarasota Ballet’s first program of the Season, titled Graziano, Retrospective, serves as a tribute to Principal Dancer and Resident Choreographer Ricardo Graziano’s tenth year with the company by featuring three of his choreographic works. Opening the program, Shostakovich Suite is his most traditionally classical ballet; premiered in 2011 and set to movements from Dmitri Shostakovich’s “Suite for Jazz Orchestra No. 2” and “Ballet Suite No. 2”, Shostakovich Suite is an eight-scene ballet demonstrating the aptitude of the company dancers whom Graziano has grown to know so well over the past decade. Graziano’s 2015 work, En las Calles de Murcia, not seen since its world premiere, returns to the stage; the choreography was inspired by the city of Murcia in southeastern Spain as well as the music of early eighteenth-century guitarist and composer Santiago de Murcia, bringing a distinctive vibrancy to the dance. The program closes with Graziano’s critically lauded In a State of Weightlessness; since its August 2015 world premiere at the Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival in Becket, MA, the production, set to Philip Glass’s “Tirol Concerto for Piano and Orchestra”, explores concepts of lightness in motion while generating its own ethereal sort of emotional gravity.
