[House & Home]  Return of the Tiny Homes Festival
Brittany Mattie, brittany.mattie@srqme.com

In just its second year running, it has grown to be the largest Tiny Home festival anywhere on the U.S. Gulf Coast and second largest in the entire state of Florida. On March 23 and 24, event producer/small business advocacy group LocalShop1 brings back the St. Pete Tiny Home Festival—rolling in more than 30 “Tiny Structures” on wheels, 50 local food trucks, mobile boutiques, regional crafters/artists, home-related businesses, an environmentally conscious water station by Chart 411 and a wine/beer garden presented by the Skyway Marina District.

The local Tiny Home movement proves to be huge and vastly growing due to their reduced costs and minimal carbon footprint. And to embrace the buzzing lifestyle trend, St. Pete Tiny Home Festival 2019 will showcase model homes and custom-made homes by professional builders, tiny work studios, “skoolies” and van conversions, built by talented enthusiasts who roadtrip the country in their habitable, portable creations. Of the SRQ regional standouts, locals can expect to find Siesta Key’s Tiny House Beach Resort, showing off its colorful brigade of vacation homes, as well as Venice’s Tiny Studios LLC, creatively transforming shipping containers into dream work/play spaces.

Tiny Studio's Founder and CEO Tamaryn Sullivan is excited to share this new venture to offer 300-600 square foot villas, studios, cabanas, retail spaces, work units, etc. “I have a massive love for all things design and construction,” she says. “I studied interior design overseas and locally. I also work closely alongside a great local general contractor.” Find Sullivan at the upcoming festival to talk tiny and check out her recently debuted layouts/designs, such as the new Bungalow unit, which is 20’x8’ -160 sq ft (1/bed 1/bath with a mini kitchen and an outdoor shower). Sullivan also noted discussions for a potential project with a not-for-profit organization to provide affordable living micro-homes to the community.

In addition to exploring and touring the grounds, guests will get to speak directly with the homeowners and builders. The event will also include a lineup of two dozen leading experts in the Tiny House Movement, with a through-line theme of eco-friendly living practices. Presentations will be held in the SPC ballroom and include practical advice on living green, sustainable communities, building on a budget, living large in a small space, decluttering your current residence, small ways to make a big difference, going solar and zoning regulations to build your own tiny dwelling.

More than 5,000 people are expected at the second annual St. Pete Tiny Home Festival throughout the weekend, many traveling from throughout the state, even across the country, and the festival is expected to sell out entirely as last year’s did. Founder of LocalShops1, Ester Venouziou highly urges people to buy tickets in advance online. "Last year, both days sold out by noon, and we had to turn away many people who showed up without tickets," she says.

"Come prepared to be entertained as well as informed," Venouziou says. "This is not a home expo—this is truly a festival showcasing Tiny Living, as well as other ways to live a more sustainable lifestyle."

St Pete Tiny Home Festival 2019 is a production of LocalShops1, and sponsored by Skyway Marina District, Chart 411, Historic Shed, Tiny House Advisor and Leaf Filter.

[GoodBite]  Freedom of Choice
Brittany Mattie, brittany.mattie@srqme.com

A modern menu revamp takes shape at State Street Eating House + Cocktails. Introducing a craveable foray of plant-based options and protein accents, diners can now create innumerable combinations of wholesome mash-ups. First and foremost, the new menu puts mindful meals front and center, while allowing guests to capitalize on an aspect that many restaurants frown upon—personalizing.

The latest expansion features a dozen new ‘Chef’s Special Garden Selections’, such as the Seared Cauliflower (drizzled with salted mango chili puree and plated atop a vibrant blend of corn, okra, sweet pepper, cilantro and shallots) or the Szechuan Noodles (sauteed seaweed and a fresh duck egg yolk). Diners can then elect to build upon and enhance their dish of choice with one of eight ‘Protein Preferences’, such as sustainable salmon, seared tofu, domestic shrimp, herb and tumeric marinated chicken, grilled octopus or grass-fed beef.

"He has a way with vegetables that will drive you nuts, they're so good," restaurant co-owner Chris Voelker says of Chef Adam Ruth’s innovations for the menu revamp. With health-conscious choices in an increasingly high demand, Chef Ruth specially delivers flavorful fare to satisfy not only dietary considerations, but diners who simply value dishes that nourish the palate as much as the body.

[Government]  CIty Urges Residents Continue Using Recycling Bins Through April 1

As new, large recycling carts are delivered curbside this month, City of Sarasota residents are urged to continue using their classic recycling bins until April 1. The new single-stream collection system begins April 1, when City of Sarasota crews take over recycling collection.  The current contractor, Waste Pro, does not have the necessary equipment to lift the 65-gallon carts, and recycling carts left curbside prior to April 1 will not be emptied.

Approximately 15,000 carts are being delivered to residential customers throughout March.  The large carts will replace the smaller recycling bins, and the new single-stream system will allow all recyclables to be placed together in the large cart. Once the new collection system begins, the old recycling bins can be placed curbside for pickup, so the City can re-purpose or recycle them.

For more information and instructions on what can and cannot be recycled, plus other Frequently Asked Questions, visit the website below.

[Government]  Manatee Hosting Public Meetings About Updated FEMA Flood Maps

FEMA representatives and Manatee County officials will hold two meetings in April to answer questions about new FEMA preliminary Flood Insurance Rate Maps (FIRM) and elevation requirements that highlight flood risk and could impact insurance rates for many Manatee County homeowners.
Over time, flood risks change due to weather events, environmental changes, erosion, land use and other factors. Maps are updated periodically to reflect these changes. FEMA recently released updated, digital flood hazard maps that show the extent to which areas throughout the county are at risk for flooding. The new preliminary FIRM is based on updated coastal modeling and Gamble Creek watershed in Parrish, and many property owners may find that their risk is higher or lower than they thought. If the risk level for a property changes, so may the requirement to carry flood insurance.

These open house meetings are scheduled for April 1 from 4pm to 7pm and April 2 from 1pm to 7pm at the Bradenton Area Convention Center in Palmetto. Residents can find out whether their flood zone has changed at the website below.
