Cancer Support

SRQ Story Project

Hearing the words “You have cancer” is one of the most life-altering statements one could ever imagine. The surreal nature of the diagnosis is overwhelming, and creates feelings of isolation and disorientation.

JFCS of the Suncoast’s Cancer Support Program in partnership with Sarasota Memorial Hospital provides a caring and responsive environment for anyone impacted by a cancer diagnosis — patients, survivors, family members, and caregivers. Programs and services include Mindfulness Meditation, Oncology Yoga, Tai-Chi, weekly and monthly support groups, workshops, and special events. Services are provided free of charge at ten locations in three counties including Sarasota Memorial’s HealthFit facility on Rand Blvd.

The classes are designed to reduce stress, improve sleep and provide tools for creating a life balance while navigating appointments and treatments. Class participants express coming away with peace of mind and feelings of ease after each class.

After attending yoga classes, one participant shared, “I appreciate that my triple negative breast cancer diagnosis was regarded with sensitivity and commitment.”

This attendee commented, “I am employed full time. Thankfully, JFCS offers a Tuesday Evening Yoga class that I attend on a weekly basis which I credit with improving my overall wellbeing.”
