Bobby Jones Tournament to Boost Women's Golf

Todays News

There doesn’t need to be a ‘No Girls Allowed’ sign at a competitive golf course. That’s the point management of the Bobby Jones Golf Club plans to drive home at the upcoming Second Annual Women’s Better Ball Open. “Women golfers is an up-and-coming group, but one often neglected at clubs,” said Bobby Jones manager Sue Martin. “We are looking to grow the female side of golf.”

Some 60 female golfers are expected to participate in the Open, scheduled for Oct. 10 and 11. Only women with a verified handicap, either with the Golf Handicap and Information Network or with the United States Golf Association, can enter the competition. Martin said that should ensure a competitive quality to the rounds of golf being played that weekend.

Entry costs $175 per team, a fee that covers two rounds of golf with a cart, tee gifts, on-course non-alcoholic drinks, lunch and awards. Day one of the competition will be on the American course at Bobby Jones, with play on the second day planned on the British Course. Jan Thornburg, Sarasota senior communications manager, said that so long as nothing prevents the use of the British Course, this tournament will be the first opportunity for golfers and the public to view new greens being completed at the city-owned course.

Martin said proceeds from the event will benefit the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. Entrees and payments must be received by Oct. 5. Registration forms may be downloaded here.
